Has Any-one heard of a Super-Choke for a Q-jet
Has any-one heard of a super-choke. This converts the coil and rod choke on the older q-Jets to electric. Does any one know were I can buy one of these. I pluged my cross-over pipe in the intake manifold and this has caused the choke to stay on for a very long time.

Turn the adjustment on your choke (the big blck dial) clockwise to loosen the spring and it will open up sooner.

This q-jet does not have a dial. It has a coil and a rod coil mounts on the intake manifold.

No, I have not heard of a Super-choke for a Q-jet. But, you've prob'ly never heard of this ....
In an earlier thread, I was complaining about a cold start issue, caused by choke problems. My choke thermostat was screwed, I think. It kept choking me off ... closing the choke flap and stalling the car. So I took one of those small-size black paperclips, the ones with the chrome pincers you would use to clip a document that's more than 20 pages or so, and I snapped it onto the carb to hold the choke open. Then I carefully removed the pincers. Getting the car started is no real problem, though it runs real rough for the first 10 minutes or so. After that, rock'n'roll.
But, who gives a crap? My ZZ4 is sitting in a comfortable box, waiting for me. Installation imminent.

If you get any information on this please let me know. The coil and rod choke is called a divorced choke (don't ask me but I think its because it is not on the carb but on the intake). I want to get rid of mine also but I want to keep my carb because it runs great (thanks Lars) and it gets good gas mileage.......as long as I keep my foot out of the go-fast pedal.

I am in the same position as you I have the stock Q-jet and it runs perfect. I have the 454 dialed in and it runs like a top " dont want to mess with it at this point". The choke worked perfectly till I decided to block the intake manifolds cross over tube Now it takes at least 20 minutes for the choke to kick down. I was thinking of making my own heater to wrap around the coil " Just like a little electric blanket" I did call a local carb rebuilder he says he has seen these electric chokes he also said they were called supper-chokes But he did not know were to buy the suckers. If you have a Napa parts outlet give them a try I cant find Napa stores in the Toronto are.

I think this might be what you are looking for
http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/nc...&usrcommgrpid=
I have seen other electric choke conversions, but I can't remember where.

If you have a Napa store in your area, and if you can look at the part before you buy that would be great. If I order the part in Canada there are no returns only exhange for defective parts This may be the part we are looking fore, http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/nc...g_string=choke

As a last resort, you can always convert to a manual choke, at least till you find a conversion kit.

[www.carbs.net]http://www.carbs.net/parts.htm[/url] sells them. I haven't personally dealt with them but they do offer quite a few Rochester parts.

If you get it let us know how it works out, I haven't gotten my divorced choke to work right since I changed intakes and had to make a new choke rod to make it sort of work.

The last of the Q-jets (about 1986) used an electric choke. You may be able to adapt one to an older Q-jet.

If you hane not plugged your intake cross-over pipe/tupe If I were you I would keep the orginal choke, Just make a new rod from clothes hanger-wire it will work perfect That is what I did when I had the high rise intake. The only reason I need electric is because I plugged the cross over pipe " Very little heat"

Re: Has Any-one heard of a Super-Choke for a Q-jet (73-454)
The ZZ4 manifold dosen't have an exhaust crossover passage. When I first installed the engine My choke worked OK, I had to install an adaptor pad that Edelbrock makes because the pad on the ZZ4's manifold is at an angle and the stock manifolds choke pad is flat. This raised up the choke pad about a 1/4 inch so I had to bendt the crap out of the original rod. This caused my fast idle cam to stick sometimes. After Lars rebuild my carb, I installed it but broke the choke rod while adjusting it. I think this electric setup would work just fine for me. The ZZ4 intake seems to get hot fast enough because there is a EGR port right behind the choke pad. There was a blankoff plate on the choke pad that I had to remove an I think (can't remember) it is ported to the EGR port for exhaust to be routed under the choke pad.
