cam selection help

cam selection help
So I picked my heads which are going to be Dart 127121. So now I need to choose a cam. With the heads the motor will come out to 9.0:1 comp and I have long tube headers and true 2.5 duals with edelbrock intake. So my thoughts were getting this cam.

I was told with my setup I should see 17-18 inches of vacuum. Any thoughts? Is there something better?
Also should I reuse stock rockers or buy new ones? What would you recommend?

have you tried CC camshaft selector software? It's a free download from their site.

was just wondering if anyone else has something close to my setup and what cam they are using

That cam should be fine especially if you hasve a stock type L48 bottom end, an automatic and a high gear differential. If your blockis undecked you can bump your compression up a little with a felpro 1094 head gasket it will help everything. The cam won't know it is not in a 4x4. I have a Marine cam in my car and it don't know it is not in a boat. I would buy a set of 1.52 rockers for it and check your pushrod geometery with a pushrod checker. You will more than likely need different pushrods.

With stock L48 bottom end, 1094 gasket and 64 CC heads I have come up with right at 9.4 to 1 when I figured it in previous threads. With your gearing you could actually go with the next size bigger cam and, as always, I would go with a hydraulic roller. Check out the Howards cams hydraulic rollers at summit. What cam would you recomend then? It wont be a track car one bit. Just a weekend cruser. The heads have a max valve lift of .510" so .480" is getting close while still giving me 17-18" of vacuum. but if theres something better show me the way. Can never have too much power

I think the cam you have chosen is a good choice for the setup you have. Yes, a roller cam would be better, but they're a lot more money. Worth it though if you can afford it. I wouldn't go with any more duration than the cam you have chosen since you only have 9.4 compression. More duration requires more compression.

Ran the numbers. With the Felpro 1094 gasket your @ 9.49 to 1 compression and with the cam you selected your DCR is 7.92 to 1. Your good to go. If you want to increase HP it will raise your operating range a little.

This one is figured with 1.6 rockers. Going to 1.52 rockers drops your lift to .494 and .490 and will lower your operating range to about 1800 to 5800. It will also drop the effective duration a little. More Duration and lift + more HP if your compression will handle it. Your DCR with this cam is 7.75 to 1. I think your gearing will handle this and no problem with vacumn or running regular gas.
There are quite a few dynoed 9.5 350 combinations here.

Camsaver Lifters
Installed a Crower 00320 solid cam in my L48.Thought about retro roller lifters but the cost and images of the link bar failing didn't go over to well.Decided to go with EDM lifters for positive lubrication to the cam lobes.[IMG][/IMG]
There are also hyd camsaver lifters that help provide more oil to the cam lobes.These have a groove on the lifter body.

The next thing is to pick out rockers. 1.52s are kinda pricey compared to 1.5s. Is there going to be much difference between them? And do I get roller tips or full rollers?

Not a lot of performance difference. If you plan on an upgrade build later I would go with the full roller 1.52 Pro magnums from comp and plan on using them on your other engine but if budget is the big issue a set of long slot summit brand roller tipped will work fine for a long time. With the lift you have go to Summits site and search for long slot rockers and you will find a selection to choose from if you don't want full roller.
