Default Exhaust donut question?

On my 75, Sb, I have shorty headers that connect directly to my stock downpipes. I'm replacing the stock donuts and the new ones have a steel sleeve coming from only one end. These donuts appear to be a porcelain like material. My question is, does this sleeve go up towards the header or down towards the down-pipe? Thanks in advance.

I'm having trouble picturing yours. On stock exhaust the sleeve goes into the pipe and sticks up enough for the doughnut to go around it. The sleeve just keeps the doughnut from being pushed in,causing a leak. Hope that helps. A pic of yours would help.
