Default New Corvette Owner

Hi guys,

I recently just purchased a white 1976 corvette stingray and I had a few questions.

1. Fan belt seems to squeak when being reved in park but not an issue when driving, any thoughts?
2. Driver side lock does not work, when clicked to lock it seizes up and you have to put the window down and stick a rod to manually release the locks (manual locks not automatic).
3. The previous owner said the passenger side window sticks and sometimes will not go back up, I have not tried it as it is up now any thoughts on this should I attempt to fix myself or take it to a shop to fix?
4. The interior is red and in pretty good shape but I would like to start converting it to a black interior. For the parking brake console and the vinyl around the shifter/parking brake what is the best black vinyl dye to buy?

Thanks for your contributions I am glad I found this community, pictures of interior to come.

Make sure the belt is tight. Are you hearing the belt or possibly a pulley?

...Driver side lock does not work...
Outside key lock or inner lock ****? The assembly instruction manual (AIM) has a diagram for each.

What is your mechanical skill level?

...what is the best black vinyl dye to buy?...
SEM automotive interior dye. It's available through automotive paint suppliers. SEM is good stuff.

Default Try this.....

Congrats and welcome !

1. Belt could be bit to lose. I believe you shouldn't have more than 3/4inch play when pressing down on it.(engine off !)
Belt could be glazed. Some spray is available for squeaking belts.
Confirm which one is squeaking. Alternator belt ? You can flex the bracket and it will tighten the belt.
If you purchase new belts, keep the old one for spare. Store in compartment. You never know when you will need one

As for the locks. Take the door panel off and you will be able to clean the mecanism accordingly. You will be able to maualy activate it while looking at it going in, up and down. This way you will see if any rods are bending and why. Lube accordingly....
As for the windows, be carefull. Dismantling any brackets in there can be a pain trying to bring it back to what it was.
Maybe with luck, with the panel off, you will be able to see what is preventing the window to move freely.

My interior is also red and it is crossing my mind to switch to black.
I did use some dye on my interior plastic and vinyl and the results were excellent with proper preparation...
Many Corvette suppliers carry the spray cans and quarts to match the year of any vette.
Using the "search" tab, you will find many pictures of vette owners whom have used dye spray...

note: I'm not an advanced mecanic but have learned a bit by being a forum member and like you, asking questions !
Having said this, keep an eye on your thread, you might get better advice from the big guys !

Have fun and be patient !

Before you start any projects, you should first purchase the aforementioned Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM), and the Service Manual for 1976.

Rethink this.
Red is pretty cool looking.
