Where can I get trailing arm bearing instructions and spec.s?
I need to replace the trailing arm spindle bearings and would like to find instructions and specs for the job, so I have a handle on the job that must be done prior to the bearings being ordered and their arrival. Where can I access this information on the internet, and where else can obtain this information? My brother and freinds are accomplished mechanics and machinists. They have offered to do the work if I provide the info, since they know it will save me a couple of hundred dollars.
Thanks a bunch
Be cool!

What I did was to read the GM service manual and that will cover the procedure pretty much, then I asked some questions here and TOM454 answered those. I built a fixture, had the tools, the rest fell in place.
If you have a machinist available then you should be ok, ask questions. Also check the search option for info on this, this is one topic that always comes up.
Good luck,
Gary

That's a good idea... putting the correct procedure on the internet. I haven't seen it anywhere though.
Maybe someone can provide a link.
The entire procedure is too much to post here... something is always forgotten or left out. But: don't follow GM's recommendation for .001 to .008 bearing endplay.
.003 or more endplay can be felt in the wheel and IMOP qualifies for the "no-no" award.
I shoot for between .001 and.002... usually .001 to .0015.
You want them tight enough to provide stellar performance (minimum camber wobble) and longevity, but not so tight that the grease gets forced out from between the rollers and the seat when the bearings heat up and expand.
The endplay is adjusted by selecting a single shim from a pre-sized set. To get .001, you may have to machine the correct shim down, because they are in .006 increments.

This may be of assistance. The pic is full size so be patient with the loading.

Good web site...
Not trying to be ****, but it is "end-play" we are checking/setting... not "runout".
End-play is for spindle bearings,
Runout is for Rotors, and
Trix are for Kids.
