Default 327 apart....what's this tell you?

I took the 327 apart that I took out of my 68' vert. I am working on putting some of the sub assemblies together as part of my frame off resto. Here's what I found out first of all:

main journal-2.445"
rod journal-2.100"

Cam lobe measurements:
Lobe at sides-1.236
Lobe at highest spot-1.536

Casting numbers on back of block:
3914678
F128

Numbers off of stamping pad:
V06I8HO
18S423917

Numbers off of rod and main bearings:
Rod bearing-CLEVITE 77 and 1 74 over CB 663 P
Main bearing-CLEVITE 77 and 3 74 over MB 2508P

What does this tell you? It appears to me that the motor has been apart once before. It is in fabulous shape. Is this a large or small journal crank? I am planning on going stock with the exception of the intake, cam, carb, and exhaust. I would like to use the stock camel hump heads, and was thinking either an edelbrock or holley intake, and a Holley street avenger carb. What do you think? What do you suggest for a cam, intake and carb? It needs to fit under a stock small block hood, and need not be a racer. I'm into cruising, not racing, but want a little get up. Nothing spectacular. Just an adequate amount of HP for cruising, without completely breaking the bank. Give me some advice, or give me some questions. I'm ready to order some parts up.

Let's see what I can tell...

The engine number V0618HO, the V means Tonawanda engine plant, the 0618 is the build date (June 18, 1968), the HO means 327, 300 HP, automatic tranny. The other digits, 18S423917 should be the last 9 digits of your VIN. If it is, then the engine is numbers matching...

Obviously, the Clevite bearings are not original equipment. The fact that they don't have a suffix after them means your crank has not been turned, and yes it is large journal. The numbers on my mains have a 20 after them and the rods have a 40, which tells how many thousandths down it's been turned. Mine has been turned twice, once by me (not personally) and once by the previous owner.

Don't know about your cam measurements, but if you're looking for a good cam, I just put in the Comp Cams Nostalgia L79 cam. It was factory replacement for my car, but would pep your engine up nicely. The part number is 12-671-4, I got it at Summit.

As far as intake and carb are concerned, I just replaced my Quadra-junk with a Spreadbore Holley, and I'm very happy with it. The secondaries are brutal. I've really grown to like the mechanical secondaries. I have full control of when they kick in, rather than being vacuum operated.

Hope some of that helps...

Bill.

Thanks for the info. Now I know that I'm large journal on my crank. I figured the crank hadn't been turned because of no size stamping on the bearing, but does the 3 74 mean march of 74? I thought I heard once that there is a date on clevite bearings. Not that it matters, just a bit of curious info. If it is a date, it's kind of neat to know that about that time it was rebuilt.
