Finished and installed my new fuel line!!! (designed by lars)
The biggest surprise was..... no leaks!!! :) At least no visible drips. I will keep an eye on it....
BIG huge thanks to lars for providing detailed, illustrated, instructions plus answering questions along the way. I have been wanting to replace my fuel line for a couple of years, and the LAST thing i would have thought of was to make my own!
Here are some pics: First, the old fuel line in place, with the little candy butt inline filter and lots of rubber. I stuck some sticky insulation on the engine because the inline filter was banging against it!!
Here is the completed lower section, with the "shield" in place. The inline filter is easy to put in backwards - gotta check for the arrows. The most important piece of equipment - lars' how-to paper underneath!! :
Here you can see the entire new fuel line and the entire old one. It is great to be rid of all that rubber hose, and chintzy inline fuel filter.
Here is the finished installation. no leaks!! :)

Excellent. I think I'll be borrowing my dads' flaring kit and making myself a metal fuel line for my new big block.

Lars provides the GM part # for a long (8 ft?) piece of fuel line that has the proper O-ring fittings on each end, and a nice length of shileding (spiral armour) on it. I ordered it from my local Chevy dealer.
How long did it take me? Oh, about two years!!
I bought the fuel filter ages ago..... then lars explained how to build it, so I bought a flaring tool, a pipe bender, a little pipe cutter, and some practice parts about 6 months ago.... but I couldnt make a double flare. I borrowed a double flaring die from Joe (Flareside) but I still couldnt make a double flare. I bought a second flaring tool set from HarborFreight, but it didnt work either... I was running out of practice material! Finally, last weekend I went to Home Depot and bought a better quality flaring tool and I was able to do the double flares.
Once properly equipped, it really takes no time at all. (But for me, being extremely slow and careful.... a couple of hours?) I got kind of lucky in bending the lower section - it fit well the first time, and I'm not sure you get a second chance! MJ

Wow, I should have had you make mine too! It's not nearly as pretty as yours ;)
So, now that the fuel line is complete, do you start on the headers? :yesnod:

Are you going to add some type of support for the filter? I would be concerned about it picking up some viberation moving enough to, over time, crack a line. Earlier cars that had an inline filter like that from the factory had a support mounting.

Your post couldn't have come at a better time. I will be doing the same thing very soon, but will be able to borrow the bender and flare tool from work. Nice set up..nice job too... thanks for the ideas and pics!!!

I just finished making my steel line too. Its a little bit harder with a dual feed Holley(meaning it doesn't look as nice as yours) Once I get the engine completey back together, then I'll test for leaks. Fingers are crossed.
The biggest mistake I made was getting in a hurry and flaring the line before I put a fitting on it  If this works nice, I'll buy somemore line and fix it up nice and pretty.... and make a line for the quadrajet too.
P.S. I never had trouble double flaring the line...... I just put the flaring tool in a vice and add clamping power to prevent the tube from slipping out the back of the flaring tool........ I tried Stainless line..........I just couldn't get it to double flare(I could have but I would have broken the flaring tool probably.

Tom73 - Of course I dont have the AIR pump which is where the bracket is mounted on 68s. I wonder if any kind of bracket is used on an 85 corvette?? (fuel filter is actually for an 85 vette).
If anybody wants the step-by-step fully illustrated instructions, lars says he will gladly email you a copy:

i did the same thing last summer, it worked very well. i even used some polish on the top section and does shine like chrome. much better than the micky mouse rubber hose, plastice filter setup. thanks lars.
