Default I wanna wake the dead.

As loud as I can get it for the street.
I do not listen to music... or talk.
I have no neighbors. I am not offended by drone.
I do not have to get it inspected - ever.
My vette is for fun. Pure pleasure - my way.

1977 SB, manual. (currently has headers and true duals, no cat)

I have been reading posts for days... and mostly find opinions pro/con for various muffler brands and pipe configurations.

In general... what is the loudest....

1. a header/side exhaust?

2. a header/true dual/muffler set up?

3. a header/chambered exhaust?

That is my question. What is the loudest combo for the street?

I have sidepipes on my '79 w/383. I ran it open headers for 2 days, was WAY too loud. It really hurt my ears while driving. I ended up going with Sweet Thunder 2.5 mufflers in the sidepipes, and while still VERY loud, it's no longer painful to drive.

My thoughts are, if it is going to loud, you bette have some huge hp to back it up. It always cracks me up seeing and hearing loud a$$ vehicles with completely stock 200hp engines. Now throw in a big block with 450 to 500hp and thump it. The craziest I see are the guys with V6's with glass packs lol Just my observations Al

Suggest something like MaxFlow or 2.75" Sweet Thunder inserts in Hooker sidemounts unless you're already deaf, as IMHO the drone from a SB with open pipes isn't all that great a symphony, especially at RPM's which develop harmonics. Agree you should be able to back up the volume with performance. Oh, and throw in a gear drive (noisy version) if you really want the sound to carry a long distance.

I ware ear foam plugs just because of wind noise if I'm out driving on a trip with the tops or windows open.

Un mufflered side pipes just are abnoxious. They(98%) are not tuned for power and they are more of all show and no go!

headers to full length 3 or even better 4 inch pipes to stainless packed race mufflers. You can drive around in traffic at light throttle and be relatively quiet. But once you open the throttle it can hurt the people that you are blowing by!

i ran straight pipes down turned after the tranny crossmember for about 3 weeks.

never... ever... again.

it did sound good though, as long as i kept it under about 1500rpm.

I have headers and 2.5 inch duals no cat with short 18 inch true 2.5 inch ID chambers (resonators), no mufflers. They have a nice sic rumble and are insane when you put your foot in it, but they have no drone and I play music constantly in mine!

Done this myself. It's so loud it turns your insides to jelly. I couldn't even focus to drive.

I have since gone to full length headers, 2.5" pipe, through x-pipe, no cats, and staight-through 2.5" magnaflow mufflers. Great sound, no drone, almost needs ear plugs but not quite. Perfect.

If you want loud....Run the exhaust open!
But why would you want to loose your ability to hear?

Electric cutouts right behind the headers. Then you can have both comfortable and obnoxious.

I had a gmpp HT383 (206/196 dur, low lift cam) with 1-5/8" open headers. Nothing bolted to them. When I pulled into the exhaust shop, the girl behind the counter had to get off the phone while I was parking because she couldnt hear the person on the other end. driving to the shop I scared to get on it because it was so loud I was sure something just had to break at that volume. So loud it scared the logical thought right out of me.
