Default Your Engine in the center of car ?

Never new there was a lot of adjustment when putting an engine and tranny back in the car. Any way I purchased some after market parts that did not work out that well, and that's the question I was asked ?

It's a 68, never any major damage, engines been out a few times over the last 40 yr's.

C3 engines are placed offcenter toward the passenger side.

This moves the trans tunnel giving the driver more room as well as offsets the weight balance of the driver.

I always thought it was to clear the steering box, but it is definitely shifted to the passenger side.

it is actually done so both half shafts are the same length for the irs
it is the same distance as the pinion offset.....

I may be mistaken but I believe it a 1" offset. Its been a while since I had mine apart...

Also make sure you have a equal but opposite trans. to pinion angle!

Confused. Where does the adjustment come into play? Are their special motor mounts? Does the chassis already have the offset? when I pulled my engine I didn't remember there being any play in the mounting.

No adjustment in mine. Standard GM fixed mounting. Just offset to the passenger side an inch or so.

Look at the location of the motor mounts in the pic. You can see the driver side extends further out. Looks to be more than an inch though. I'm out of the country right now or I'd measure it.

I guess it is true you learn something new everyday. I really had not even noticed that the engine is offset. Guess I know what I am doing after work today. Need to check this out.

That, and to make footwell room for the pedals are the only things that make any sense to me.

IIRC, other (bigger) Chevrolet RWD vehicles don't offset the engine, so it seems like a packaging issue to me. (I don't believe C4s, C5s or C6s are offset.) If you do the math the amount of weight shifted to the right side is insignificant (really, do the math).

I always understood that the 1 inch offset was to provide more room in the drivers footwell.

But the difference in the length of the motor mounts would be 2 inches, which looks about right.

The engine offset is 1" to the passenger side, the pinion offset is about 7/16 to the passenger side
