What/where does the dash volt gauge measure?
Where is the volt gauge on the dash getting the electrical signal from?
What is it actually measuring?
(I ask because I have a discrepancy between the alternator readings and the dash volt gauge readings)
1977 4 speed.

If I remember right the 77 is "just" a voltage gauge. If it is reading lower than the readings your getting off the back of the alternator thats normal.

I added a volt gauge to mine instead of an ammeter. I just used an pink "ignition" switched wire to the cluster. The hot feed to the temp gauge and fuel gauge.

That is the question I would like to get an answer to as well.
The Alternator sends the power to the Battery. The Battery powers the accessories.
My VOLT meter reads really sporadic and low... sometimes it goes as high as 12 but mostly goes to about 9 or 10. (should be at 14 +)
Also, my GEN light on the dash is on as well.
Testing reveals my Alternator is at 14.2 and my battery is at 12+ before starting and 14.2 with the engine running. Accessories are testing at 12 volts (cig. lighter, power window motors, etc.)
So, as one would expect, I am really nervous seeing my GEN light glowing and my VOLT readings down in the red.
So... the question is:
What Is The VOLT Meter on the dash actually reading?
