Default Loud clunking when I get on the brake pedal

I have LOUD clunking sound when I get on the brake pedal. Sounds like something wants to crack. If I feather the pedal it doesn't do it. Sounds and feels like its coming from the front drivers side.

I pulled the wheel and everything looked fine. The caliper looked fine, no cracks or any visible evidence of something broken. I have not yet removed the brake pads or the caliper, that's today.

Any ideas before I rip into this.

Thanx....Steve

If its just one clunk check your upper control arm alignment shims and also your sway bar struts.

Could be control arm bushings make sure you check all front end components.
My 81 had a clunk as well and it was worn front end parts.

I had an issue where the tie rod was not installed correctly. The extra length of the bolts that snug down the ends was protruding forwards and contacting the control arm when the front end lowered during braking.

Reorienting the tie rod bolt connector thingy solved it.

Steering links, ball joints, wheel bearing....basically, any components linked with with front wheel can cause such a problem sound. There is definitely something wrong and you don't what to find out what it is by having it fail while driving.

Steve,

Could be anything. The lower aframe bracket broke on mine. Judging by the condition of your car I doubt it is anything as serious as that. If you read this before Sunday afternoon PM me. I'll stop over and hopefully two heads are better then one. One person under while the other hits the brakes usually works

My friend offered to come with me but I told her your car is too low and she should just stay home.

I had the same sort of clunk.

This is what was left of my lower control arm bushings.

The nut backed its way out of the upper control arm and the shims must have fallen off. Car is at the shop getting aligned as we speak.

They did my '69 GTO. I think I am going to use Shore wheels unless I do it myself. Let me know how you like their work

wcsinx did that no control arm bushings cause your car to pull to one side while applyin brakes.

Uhhh maybe?

The car pretty much wandered all over the road no matter what you were doing.

Someone asked me the same question and I gave the same answer, I'm sure I will notice the difference once its fixed.
