anyone drag race their c3? new here.
new here, im 20 y/o and i bought my first corvette, iv owned it for about a month. i plan on drag racing it, and drive it on the street a little. im also wondering how often ill be buying new diffrentials lol. i hear the aluminum danas are fairly weak. doing the best i can on a mechanics wage
my vette. 1980 l48
the motor stayed stock for not even 24h after i bought it.
looks terrible with that dist, andplug wires.
-dart pro 1 180 aluminum heads
-edelbrock rpm intake
-comp FT solid lifter cam which will be swapped out to a larger one when i get a high stall converter.
-dble roller chain.
-holley 650 dp.
-1/2" spacer.
other modifications and repairs iv done so far:
-solid motor mounts
-pwr steering delete
-AC delete
-new rear u joint
-new mufflers, cheapo thrush welded chambers
-cross over pipe (H-pipe).
with all the parts taken off, and the aluminum heads the car weighs 3150. it weighs 3300 with me. hoping to get atleast anouther 100 pounds off it.
plans:
-new tci th350 trans, current is good but is a th350c.
-larger solid lifter cam
-4000ish stall converter.
-3.70gears.
-3" exh that dumps befor diff.
-msd distributer and digital 7 box
-NOS super powershot 100hpshot nitrous.
-aluminum water pump.
-new lighter wheels and tires
-aluminum calipers, and possibly manual brakes..
-when the motor blows... all forged 350 with bigger heads.
hoping to run 11.50s
does anyone else drag race?
some of the other cars my dad and i play with.. its kinda like a father son team.
mustang, i ran a best of 12.26. vortec blower, 5 speed. dads car
80 camaro. my dad ran a best of 11.22 so far. dads car
car i just sold to buy the vette
my 80z28 resto project.
my dads all orig low mile 81z28.

Welcome to the forum. I don't drag race my Vette, but a lot of people here do. Maybe they'll chime in later on. A lot of people change their aluminum pumpkin for an iron one. Those are some great looking Camaros you guys have there. I wish my '78 Z28 looked half as good as those. Good luck.

and a good-bit with my one-owner Z28 (12.80's @ 105, lotsa wins)

Welcome to the forum..good to see another street/strip racer here. Y'all have some cool cars BTW. There are about 10 people that I recall race here on the forum.(lol, pitiful I know...).
Anyway, here is my stocker...
Runs consistent 7.00s@100 in the 1/8. Only ran two full 1/4 passes, best was 10.99@123.88. This with 3.08 gears.
I will be back to the track in October with a new IRS, a little more gear, an electric fan swap and some carb tuning. Hoping for 10.70-10.80s.

I will be making my first run with my 68 this weekend (weather permitting) and hoping to pull 7.5 in the 1/8.. I just installed my slicks but dont have any udated photos yet. My Camaro ran 6.92 (1/8) and 10.80's (1/4) but in the photo I de-tuned and was dialed in at 7.58 for braket racing..

I use to race my c3, but racing is rough on the car. I am rebuilding it now for a more show and cruising car. I do however race my Z06 and currently ran a best of 11.0@137. Racing is tough on any car so expect broke parts.

I used to race my 69- low 12s at 112+ MPH. I've since gone to aluminum heads, much better intake, a good bit more cam, and L-88 hood w/ airbox but I haven't run it since the changes. After running 50+ passes I had the rear end opened up & inspected. They said it looked brand new inside. Of course that's a stronger rear than yours but the auto trans will help absorb some of the shock to the drivetrain. Good luck.

My advice Is to forget drag racing your corvette. Make it nice street rod. My Vette won allot of drag racing events, but it also cost big time because in one year from hell it blew the rear end. Then the big buck TH350 shredded. Then i get all that fixed with a 4 speed automatic and the 5-6th time down the track the new TCI tranny blows instantly bending every valve from valve float. I finally got smart. So i said screw drag racing except for an occasional event like the All Corvette drag races or some other special event.
I also owned a hot Rice bike. I did a few mods and put on a rear drag slick. Cars are boring! Drag bikes are a kick in the Butt to drive. Rev the motor to 8000 rpm and drop the hammer. The front end comes up a couple of feet and keep it on full throttle and ride the rear brake a little if it comes up to high. For under $10K you can be in the high 9 seconds. After a couple of winning years and never replacing one part I got the go faster bug. So I found a full out 1335 cc Suzuki turbo drag bike for sale in the back of national dragster mag. Very consistant 7.60 @ 174 mph That was a fun bike. Never had to work on it, fill the nitrogen air shift bottle, charge the battery and add fuel. I drove that bike for 3 years and sold it for what i had in it. So it was free racing. IMO - cars are so boring. Dragsters and drag bikes actually get my need for speed filled. Bikes are so cheap and go so fast.
Oh, for the record. My old smaller 383 ci motor was a very consistant 11.70 bracket car.

My 383 is my spare motor in a box and I run a quality solid roller 434 ci Motown block now with a 5 speed
I bought the port spray manifold from a 69 camero drag racer that kept breaking crank shafts in his 421 ci when he was running it dual 250 for a 500 hp boost. So he said it was reliable at the 375 hp level using 115 octane race gas in a seperate two gallon tank for the spray.
He said screw N20 and went to a 510 alki injected runs fine and lasts a long time reliable 1000 hp and does 8.40's and competes in 8.90 S/C with a delay system

I ran my convertible for years.....in the 10's and high 9's before I ever put a bar in it. You just don't get many passes before they throw you out! Or make you slow down.
Rules are a little easier these days with all the fast factory converts if you're running regular tires etc.

Our local 1/8 mile track could care less if you have a roll bar.. I ran 6.90's without one in my Camaro, which is equivvalnt to 10.80's
The rules at the 1/4 mile track here are faster than 12.00 and they will follow up on it..
