My all original 78 (L48 engine) has a small round cylinder piece that looks very much like a condensor mounted on the intake . It has a wire running out of each end, but neither is connected to anything. My questions are what is this thing and where should it be connected. Everything on the car works, so I am not sure what it does. Could it be a noise filter for the radio?

Sounds like the tach filter, usually mounted close to the distributer. Filters out spikes that could effect the tach function.

I agree with TopGunn its the tach filter,here is an interesting diagram out of the GM manual, check our which wire the filter is on.

Sorry, Roger....I don't see the tach filter in that diagram. There are two radio noise suppresors, but no tach filter. I believe the filter is in the line going to the tach.

I know because in some of the GM diagrams the object we are talking about was referred to as a radio suppressor not a tach filter. Hmmm

Just to be clear for the OP, the tach filter and the radio noise suppressor are two entirely different things. The noise suppressor is a capacitor (or condenser, in old auto lingo). The tach filter has a capacitor or two in it, but also has a couple of resistors in the 'can', also. The radio noise filter is just to eliminate the pops and clicks [from switching devices] out of the radio sound. The tach filter cleans up the tach signal line so the tach will read correctly.
