Default want to hear from folks running solid motor mounts.

if you are using solid mounts please give me your opinion. i am installing my 489 stroker this week and have to make a decision on motor mounts soooon. going in my 71 with auto trans. i have a new set of morosso's, but not sure if i need to use both of them, or just the driverside and rubber on passengerside (maybe wih bolts thru it). thanks,
gerald

You probably only need a solid on the driver's side, but since you have a set already I would run them.
Actually I am running them. I have Mororso solid engine mounts and a poly trans mount.
I dont have any complaints other than it was harder than usual line up the mounts when the engine went in since there is no flexibility there.

Going down the road I dont notice any vibration.
At idle there is a little, but with my cam it would be there with rubber mounts too.

Good : Stiffens up the front end, don't have to wait 1/1000 sec for the rubber mount to catch when you floor it. Won't break as easy. No more vibration than poly or rubber and actually at idle there might even be less because the motor is not moving back and forth on rubber mounts. Shifter actually doesn't rattle as much as with rubber mount due to what I said above.

Bad : My experience with a standard transmission is there is not much cushioning or give when changing gears and mine would clunk between gears if I only gave it bit of gas. Might not be a problem with others and might not be a problem with an automatic.

I definitely didn't like it so I changed to poly and put in an A arm spreader bar to keep the front stiff

I have solid motor mounts with a poly trans mount. I can't really tell any difference vibration-wise but I know they will never break.

Couldnt tell any difference, except: (1) engine/car no longer twists under a quick throttle, and (2) it raised the engine (and hence tintake/carb/air cleener) height slightly.

I have solid motor mounts on my big-block 69 Camaro and never had a problem.

Does my 1976 and 1981 need the short or long solid motor mounts?
I'm assuming the shorts but does anyone know for sure?

L-2.125 in., W-2.375 in., Long,

I've had solid Moroso motor mounts on my car for 12 years. No problems, other than header bolts shaking loose occasionally, and that may not be attributable to the mounts.
with added aggravation lining up the motor when dropping it in

I've had them for ages in my C3. Became a convert the first time I had a big block literally try to come out thru the hood due to a failed OEM mount. That'll get your attention.

But, NEVER run a solid transmission mount, IMCO, unless you like broken housings. Instead, strap a large hose clamp around it if you'd like a little insurance.

When I first read this post I thought 'Yes I have the solid mounts'... but after reading more I realized I only have poly and you guys are seriously talking solid....

Still learning... I did the poly Motor Mounts, and Auto Transmission with a Spreader bar. I know my hp (505 at motor) is nothing compared to you guys though.....

Heehee - isn't that part of the fun - having your teeth shake out from the lope of the cam at idle?

Solids in a '79 seem fine. I do feel a bit of vibration through the steering wheel on part throttle acceleration but nothing bothersome. Driver side mount did seem to throw off the alignment of the power steering pump so it was shimmed at the pump to get the pulley aligned for the belt.

I have the Moroso solid mounts (both sides) in my 78 with a 540 BBC and a poly mount under the 700R4 trans.

I like them. highly recommend.

Metal fatigue can be a problem with the solid steel motor mounts...

A few years ago I had some solid steel motor mounts, but the one on the driver side developed a 3/4 inch crack on one of the vertical legs - only about 1/4 inch remained. This occurred over a 1 or 2 year time frame.

Now, I'm back to rubber with the improved safety design.

going with solids and rubber trannie mount. with a 489 stroker you really cain't complain about rough idle or vibrations. cain't wait to here the solid lifter cam at idle.
