Default Installing the rubber fuel lines to gas tank on a '76 question!

Hello,

I have been searching the Forum and can't seem to understand if this is a PITA or not. Seems like some posts say that the body has to be lifted up a few inches, others say "small hands" will get the job done. Anybody have the real scoop? I would love to see some pics too!!

Thanks,
Tab

The 3 rubber lines connected at the top of the gas tank - supply, return and vapor, can be changed by dropping the tank. Its a good idea to change the pickup filter sock inside the tank at the same time. The body lifting issue pertains to replacing the metal lines from the tank to the fuel pump.

Ok, thanks guys...

I haven't searched on dropping the tank down yet.. let me guess! It's not as simple as just loosening a few bolts or straps is it?

I don't guess I need to drain the tank to replace these parts do I?

Thanks again,

You need to drain the tank to simplify lowering it. Gas is about 7.5 lb/gal so a few gallons get heavy. On my 77 I needed to drop the exhaust system to have enough room to lower the tank but this depends on your particular mufflers, etc. To drain the gas, disconnect the rubber line going into the fuel pump and make sure you have a suitable container under there. I thought my tank was on fumes and I still had about four gallons. It helps if the back of the car is raised a little higher than the front for draining purposes.

It's not too bad. Take all of the advice posed here and reuse your exhisting tank straps. Of course you will want to clean and repaint everything before reassembly.
