Default RPM AirGap on a 73 L48?

I have an EngineFactory 420/415 Crate Motor that has a Torqer II they put on for clearance issues. I know this thing is robbing low end power. I would like to install an RMP or RPM Airgap but I am seeing mixed answers on the forum threads. With the right filter, will this fit or not? If so, anyone recommend a good drop base cleaner?

I found this diagram on the Edelbrock site, don't know if it's any help. I also see they specifically state that at least 2 of the 5 Performers wont fit under a Vette hood

If you look below each manifold they list the A B sizes.

I've had a RPM under the hood of my smallblock-equipped '76 for years. I cannot recall which air cleaner I got for it, but I do remember not having to work very hard to find something that fit perfectly.

I have an air gap on my '73. I'm using a drop base air cleaner, with a 2.3 inch height K&N filter. You may be able to fit a 3 inch filter, but I also have a nitrous plate on mine. It's definitely doable.

The quickest, dirtiest way I know of to measure hood clearance . . .

1. Place modeling clay or equivalent on the manifold
2. Close hood
3. Raise hood and measure the clay

Do a search for my post on this subject. Edelbrock's info is genereic and useless.

I have an RPM Q-Jet (same height as an Airgap) under a stock '75 hood (same as the the '73). I used a Moroso Low Profile Racing Aircleaner with 3" filter. The base just touches the HEI (iginition shielding long gone) and has 3/4" of clearance with the hood.

I cannot access my Photbucket account at work to post pics but just search for my name and "Moroso air cleaner".

Edit: Did my own search and added pic links.

There are different hoods. The 73-79 med. rise hood allows the RPMs & others on SB w/ aftermarket dropbase filter & Holley.

Drop base air cleaner almost any small block intake will fit, I've run Performer, RPM Air Gap and Vic Jr under my '80 hood. I currently have a Vic Jr and modified the bottom of this non drop air cleaner to clear my '80 hood.

Like stated above the hoods are different for different years, I use plumbers putty and put it on the 4 corners of the air cleaner and push the hood shut to see how much clearance there is.

I have one on my 75 and it even has a once inch spacer on it and it all fits. The drop base is what you need. I installed a Holley oval air cleaner and just trimmed off the bottom lip, but the drop base is your best bet. Here is a pic of mine, but I do not recommend the air cleaner you see on it.

How do I now if I have a medium rise hood?

Medium rise = Stock hood

The 73-79 hood is taller than both the 68-72 SB and 68-72 BB/LT-1 hoods.

Great! Thanks for the help guys! This will be my fourth Vette, but my first C3. Have that learing curve to go through...again.

My local shop put one similar on mine (think it's an Edelbrock), why don't you like yours?

I have to admit I'm not liking the one on mine much.

Apparently they can catch on fire or melt if there is a backfire and the foam inside can deteriorate over time and get sucked into the motor.

The foam one that was on there before had started to break up, hence the replacement.

That's right. I learned the hard way. When I first installed my motor and it was backfiring until we got all the timing down. It wasn't pretty.

Save yourself a lot of grief and get the drop base air cleaner. The one you have is a hazard and will melt or break up and down the carb it goes.

Good luck.
