Default 5 or 6speed gearbox

Hello

I will remove my 4speed gearbox and put in an 5 or 6speed gearbox.
But i need an gearbox that is strong, because i will run an 454cui engina and an 150hp fogger system. So i will have about 600hp.
I have heard that the Camaro have an gearbox that fitt, what year can i use?Or do you have any other ide?

I have a ZF (manual) 6-Speed in my 96 LT-4 Vette with 3.45 rear gears, and almost never use 6th. I guess if I could find somewhere I could cruise at 90-100, 6th would be used.

I say go with the Tremac, TKO-600 5-speed, reportedly good to 600 ft/lbs of torque. Has two options for overdrive ratios.

Good luck!

Thanks 73, Dark Blue 454

I have 3,70 in rear,so your gearbox could be better i my car.
Oh yes,the Tremec gearbox looks verry fine, but not the price
I only want to buy the gearbox, not the other parts that is in the Tremec kitt to Corvette (3800$).And if i buy a Tremec gearbox from Summit racing then the shifter is placed in the center of the box,and i need tho have it a little to the left,as the kitt have.Or can i buy the "offset"shifter from another plase? As you se the shifter are "offset" in the picture.

Have a look on my website and you will see the installation of my Tremec T56 6 speed. Great box, along with a 4:11 dif, I cruise at 80mph with 1400rpm, very relaxed. The other 5 gears are close ratio so you get real performance when you want it.

Hello Graemeinvette

The Tremec T56 you use, arent they only rated to 450ft ibs?Because i will have more torque an that.In my 1969 i have an Richmond rod 6speed and they only take 450ft ibs to.So i looking for an box that handel about 600ft ibs.

Check out Keisler's 5 speed transmissions. They're specfically designed to bolt right into a 68-82 Corvette and they have two versions capable of handling 600 ft/lbs, one with a .82 5th gear and one with a .64 5th gear:

Tremec or the Richmond Super Street 5 speed overdrive is rated at 600 lbft although all these torque ratings are really arbitrary and much depends on other things.

The 600 ft-lb rating is for a 5000 lb vehicle. Assuming (*** U ME ) this is a linear relationship, the equivalent rating in 3500 lb vette would be just over 850 lb-ft. This is probably not true, but does show there is some margain there with a lighter vehicle.

Lars,

you can get just the gearbox without a kit - you just need to find a dealer for it. That's how I got mine. Also, an offset adapter is available for the stick. I got myself one.

That black thing with sticking bit can be rotated to get left offset function.

Sorry mate, the car is still in bits and pieces. To my understanding the only need for cutting fiberglass is if you are going from auto to TKO ie. you need to cut the offset opening for stick in the tunnel.

Here's a link for one installation: http://www.corvettec3.ca/tko.htm

Correct. The auto cars obviously don't have the hole for the stick coming from the gear box. The hole is very easy to cut. I have done this to a few cars and it is no big deal. If you already have the 4 speed the hole is there. The only thing I would suggest is making your cross member removeable. It is not necessary but it makes the job a whole lot easier and future work will be a lot easier.

Hey Fin.... I have a 79, and I am tired of cursing at 4-4.5kRPM... so I have been thanking the same my self.... RICHMOND now has a 5 speed Super t-10, Fits as a direct replacement for the old T-10... at least this is what I have read and was told about 6 months ago when I was looking....And it is a 500-600hp box....

http://www.richmondgear.com/01fivespeed.html

better fit, and less instll problems from what I have been made to believe..

good luck

Ben Lurkin...

I'm curious....just what does the weight of the vehicle have to do with the amount of driveline torque provided by the engine? Torque is torque...as long as it can get transferred to the pavement. The same level of torque provided by a 3500 lb car vs. a 5000 lb car just means that the light one will accelerate quicker. The drivelines still experience the same loads and stress.

?????????????

That Super T-10 with .77 overdrive 5th (if I was looking at right transmission) appears to be a good alternative. Especially if it is a direct replacement. It's a bit pricey (trans only) compared to Tremec but then again Tremec will need a bit of fiddling with installation parts. Just do it.

?????????????

the tires break away easier on the lighter car, thus not putting the stress on the drive train like a heaver car....
YOU have the same strength weather you push a 5 pound wagon or a 500 pound wagon... what do you think is harder for you to push and puts more work on you body....

make sense?
