"popping" at WOT
Can anyone tell me the cause of a popping sound at WOT. Seems to always be when the engine warms up, but when it is cold I don't really ever punch it so I don't know. I have a Edelbrock 1406 w electric choke. The choke does turn off all the way when warm. I have also noticed the idle is a bit high even though the throttle is back as far as the carb will allow and frequently idles high when warm. Any help is greatly appreciated since I am new to tuning carbs.
Thanks

If its a popping under the hood, and the idle is too fast, most likely timing too far advanced on the dist.
if is popping/cracking sound out of the tail pipes at WOT, then you are lean surging and may need to jet up the primaries/secondaries.
What does the exhaust smell like at idle? if you have the curb idle screw all the way out and it smells a bit rich, check that the secondary butterflies are closing enough, some carbs have an screw that will hold them slightly open.

A worn cam lobe would be popping irregardless of engine temp. More info and we may be able to help

Add tired valve springs to the list.

how did you go taylor? was it timing. that would have been my guess. dizzy prob spun about 10 degrees from hard launches. when it advances more then 10 you will get popping through the exhaust from start up and thats when you know you did a real good job laying rubber.
