Nova thank you for making that list for me. I think I am going to stay stock with the engine and make some replacements which I can do.
(I found some hooker side exhaust for 1,300 good price? also how hard are they to install/ how much would it cost to have goodyear do it?)
Thank you all you have been a great help to me

I did a rebuild with a local circle track builder doing the machine work and assembly. New balanced assembly with Scat rotating assy, I-beams rods and KB pistons. He ported my heads, installed screw in studs, HD guideplates and roller rockers.Cam is Comp XE268H. Bill came in at $3200.00 ready to install. Since I stuck with gen I heads and block everything bolted right back where it goes! Oh and did I mention it's now 383ci!

Here is a link to pics of the process!

Here is what she looks like with everything completed

This was a good decision for me. I now also have the builder and his track friends available for consultation and tweaks!

peace

ps; I had no gas mileage related objective....I am probably doing good to get 15...but when i drive this car it's for fun and i put my foot in it a lot!

I took a low mile "R" motor from a 2002 suburban-Freshened it up.....installed new GM hotcam, GM performance alum intake Eldelbrock carb and HEI Ignition with Hooker Headers/Sidepipes with the new high flow mufflers

Now I have more HP than traction AND on the highway 23mpg or so!!!

I'm going to buck the trend here and recommend you go with an LS1/6 setup. Many places sell low mileage engines with trans. There's plenty of aftermarket support for gen 3/4 engine swaps and plenty of info on the forum to guide you through it. With you gas mileage concerns you'll be very happy with an LS1/T56 combo. You'll make more power than any of the other motors mentioned and double the gas mileage.

My 1st engine was like a LS6 even though it was a 2001 LS1

just had a little head work and cam. Ran good.

NEW MOTOR IS RUNNING... 418ci LSX

I went with the GM Performance 330hp 350. I'm very happy with it. I looked into rebuilding my original engine but it was going to cost about the same as a new motor. This way I can drive as much as I want and not worry about damaging the original engine.

A little more than your basic Gen1 rebuild but youll never "go back" once you drive one of these guaranteed.

Just saw they have a big block carb'ed crate LS now too.

Killer power, very efficient engines that can take all the abuse you can throw at them.

I was thinking between these.
There is no question that LS motors are more fuel efficient than the old gen1 small block. But if fuel efficiency is what your looking for, swap out your trans for a later model auto with overdrive, or a T56 5 speed with over drive. The T56 would be the most expensive of those swaps, and still would be considerably cheaper than an LS swap with greater fuel efficiency.

For what you spend on a 330hp or 355hp crate motor. You can buy late model 5.3 motor trans, harness and computer for about 1,500.00

You will have you efficiency and power. The make 285-310 from the factory. you will get better mileage and run mid 13s with a stock motor no changes. Or swap the cam change intake... headers. Run low 12s with awesome gas mileage and drive-a-bility compare to a GEN I motor.

(Because I have no idea where to buy any of that stuff)
The only things I have researched are some Throttle bodys Cold air intakes Tuners and such for a new mustang. This is way different.
Be sure if you decide to go a flat tappet cam you use oil with a zinc additive. Or, use a roller cam to avoid that hassle. I learned the hard way.
