Default 4-speed shifter rattle

On my 1971, the stock 4-speed shifter really rattles at high rpms. It's that reverse finger-pull mechanism on the shifter. I have to keep my fingers on it the whole time I'm driving to keep it quiet.

I've taken it apart, and it just seems like that's how it's designed. Is there some rubber/other material part that I might be missing?

Thanks...

Maybe the spring for the backup part of the shifter is worn out. I'd stretch it to see if this creates more tension on the part.

Just a thought - maybe if you packed some vasaline into it would be enough to stop the rattle.

Packing Vaseline around your "reverse finger-pull mechanism" ? That don't sound right.

Go buy a Hurst shifter - that will sort that problem + others

Although the Vasoline might feel better, I'm with Tex, and thinking the spring might need to be stretched a little to put more tension on the reverse lock-out in the shift ****.

actually the Hurst bolts to the trannsmission,
it will multiplie any drive train vibration you have.
going down the road if you shift into neutrual does the vibration go away ?
the stock shift bolts to the frame cross member, which reduces drivetrain vibrations
that get transmitted thru the shifter. 69VETT

Have to dissagree. I know what your saying, the logic makes sense.

Had the stock rattlesnake shifter for years. Soon as I changed to a hurst ....bye-bye rattle. Don't know why that is,(don't want to think about it).

I feel your pain. What I did is remove the ball and get a felt washer and place it between the reverse lock out on top and the ball. Trim washer as needed.

Default rattle

I've found that after awhile a grove will wear into the barrel of the slip yoke and play will develope between the yoke and the tail bushing of the tranny which will cause vibration and shaking the shifter. Also go to a service shop and have them inject grease into the shifter housing if you want.
Forget the Vaseline.
