hissing when braking
I've been on recently regarding brakes and braking, I still have soft brakes and I have changed the fluid, bled them twice, removed the pads, cleaned the edges then greased sliders and pins, and still can't get the bite from the brakes, is the hissing noise from the footwell when braking normal? any other ideas? except buy a motive power bleeding set.

Thanks guys, I've tried everything else and was dreading that answer, but least now I can get to work with that.

p.s. Anyone one know the best place to get this part and are the remanufactured one any good? with "O.E. quality seals"???(looking to keep the cost down as import charges kill us over here!

I agree with everyone else about the hissing being the booster, but wanted to prepare you for something else.
When you replace it, dont expect it to fix a soft brake pedal, assuming thats what you mean by "soft brakes".
Now if what you meant was that its difficult to stop now due to a hard pedal, a new booster can help with that.

Hey, and no, its difficult to stop with a soft pedal, can push the pedal to the almost to the floor no problem and there doesn't seem to be any real bite to the brakes, if you jump on the pedal, the car just slows to a stop, ie doesn't nose dive like a modern car, couldn't lock the wheels up even if I tried.

The sole job of the booster is to make the pedal easier to push.
Soft, low brake pedals are caused by leaky seals or air in the system.

You need to investigate the soft brake problem further. I have been a victim of the dreaded soft brakes, it's more likely than not that you will have air getting into the calipers from brake rotor runout or bad sealing calipers. I had everything except a bad booster, bad m/c, worn caliper s/s sleeves, too thin brake rotors that had up to 0.016" runout, wedge worn pads, soft hoses. I can't wait until the calipers arrive and the brakes are back to as new condition.
