I am trying to figure out what type of engine this is. Looking around I found the following #'s:

Driver's side rear of the block near the flywheel : 8999289 CM 10T
Passenger's side rear of the block near the flywheel : C12 73
Front of engine, maybe head # GM 8947801 has firing order 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2

I was told it may be a truck engine? Want to try and find out for sure.

Check for numbers on the stamp pad, a machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head. Should be two numbers stamped there, one will look like V0123XXX and the other like 1Z7S99999.

Post those and we can tell you what you have got.

Here's what Mortec says that is:

"3999289....454.......72-79...2 or 4 bolt, some "CE" replacement blocks had four bolt main caps"

Edited: Believe you're reading that first "3" as an "8." I'm supposing this is a big block.

Gerry72 - I went back to the engine and confirmed the following:

Block # 3999289 Casting Date C 1273 (March 12, 1973)
Engine Assembly Date T0316TRK (March 16)

So this is indeed a 454 big block built in 1973 installed in my 1969 car.
What kind of potential does this engine have being rebuilt? Being a 454 is good but how do you track down the HP and Torque based on the Block and Assembly information? What do you think?

First, the only way you have a shot at the engine's original specifications is to get the information off the stamp pad on the deck. The stamped alpha-numeric code on the block's deck will allow someone to identify what the block's original application was if, and this is a big IF, the engine is completely intact. Power potential lies in the cylinder heads. Get the casting number off the cylinder heads and find that number on Mortec's site. If someone put on the peanut-port truck heads...well, there wouldn't be much hope that you're going to make big horsepower numbers with those heads.

Potential is really hard to say. It depends on what your expectations are. If you're interest is fuel economy, well forget that. As long as the block is sound, there's little doubt that you have a good candidate for rebuilding. Even in their mild iterations, a 454 is hard to beat whether your interest is low-rpm torque or the top-end charge.

From the stamped engine assembly date that you provided, "T0316TRK", the TRK suffix indicates (along with the casting date in '73) that your engine was built for use in a '73 Truck with 454ci/240 hp and automatic transmission. I was not able to determine torque specs using my source (see link below).

Get the casting number for the heads. I believe you're still in good shape here though as long as the heads belong on the block. There are two iron oval port heads with the peanut oval port not being introduced until 76 or 78 (sorry, I don't recall specifically but I'm sure it was after '73).

Checked out the head # 353049 it is 73-84 oval open 454. What do you think now?

Russ, the 049 heads are good stuff. You've got just about the best hardware you could have hoped for. Now your decision will be whether to rebuild it or not. As I said before, I just don't see you doing it for much under $4000 in our area will parts, labor, and installation. Maybe you could pull it off for $3k? Why don't you email 69er(Joe) and/or NJ74stingray(Frank). Great guys. They're both in our area, and have recently completed rebuilds like you're contemplating.

Russ, it looks to me like you almost have a 73 LS-4 going there. the 3999289 block casting is the same as mine along with the 049 heads. the internals may however be way different if it was originally to be used in a truck. Well at least you know you have a descent set of heads.
