Default Engine Compartment Heat

I have read most of the posts on how to control the bleed thru heat coming from the headers and into the cabin. I can't remember which heater hose was recommended I connect a valve to (to regulate the water going to the heater core). Can I connect a valve to both hoses (bottom and top)? If I do this, does water still flow through the engine to cool it?

The engine will cool the same with the heater hoses shut off. You can stop the flow by putting a valve in the pressure line, the one from the intake manifold. Some will say to put a valve in each hose, I only have it in the one and it works good.

I got it from Napa for around $30 but I don't remember the part #.
