I remember seeing over the years more than a few Vettes driving in the snow. First one I saw was about 1971. My family thinks I'm nuts and make this stuff up. They also don't believe that ordinary people had to drive their Mustangs, Camaros, Cuda's and Road Runners in the snow. This of course before they became "classics". So now each time we're together driving and I spot a Vette, or other "not snow worthy" car, I'm sure to point it out to them.

I also remember putting studded snow tires on my '67 Formula 400 Firebird  One winter, the snow was so deep, I almost bought a set of chains for her.

Last Vette I saw in actual snow was a C-5 about a year ago---and a shapely female was driving!. :yesnod:

50/50 weight distribution works well on anything. I've never driven mine in snow but I have a friend who has in the past. I did drive an RX-7 for 2 winters in Vermont (same good weight distribution.) The first winter I ran the wide summer tires, which made for some interesting trips home after it snowed. With snow tires the car went almost anywhere.

I drove my 69 through 3 winters in CT, it was my everyday car. The only problem was I didn't have the washer working-still don't  It handled fine in up to 6" of snow- no snow tires just 60 series Firestones

I'm thinking about buying a Vette soon, but my only reserve is about the snow here in Nebraska. Someone said that snow tires did the trick. Are these the same things as studded tires? Did someone also say that 'Vettes have 50/50 weight distribution? Is that for every year? Thanks for the help guys. The responses to my post may determine if I get a 'Vette or not, so any info. is appreciated.

-Paul

P.S. what are 60 series firestone tires? Are they different from the originals?

Driving a 20 plus year old car in the snow and salt is not right. Its is almost as bad as the people who let the cars sit outside and rot for years. Winter salt will destroy the car.

Posi, wide tires, and a careful right foot can make a 'vette handle better in the rain than one of those 'surefooted' FWD cars. Agreed about the winter salt! There are 'holes' in the frame. The front cradle, where the trailing arms attach, behind where the steering gear attaches... salt, water, and (ech) salt-water get inside the frame and rust it from the inside out.

Firestone 60's are just that- 60 series tires made by Firestone. These were SS radials that were in the same grouping as the 500's if I recall. This group of tires were prone to blow outs like the recent Firestone tires on the SUV's.
I don't drive the vette in the snow anymore but the point I wanted to make was it did handle OK when I did. Of course at the time, late 70's- mid 80's, c3 vettes were a dime a dozen and cheap. I bought my 69 for $3,300 and drove it every day. Still have the car and had to replace part of the frame rail because of rust. I enjoyed it more back in the 80's because it was just another plain vette, never thought I'd keep the car as long as I have

1970 Stingray:
I find that funny because my dad told me a story very similar. My mom and dad used to drive the '72 454 Chevelle in winter time....it's the only car they had other than the Corvette and the Vega (they weren't gonna drive the 'Vette in the snow). My dad would drive the Vega to the mines and my mom would drive the 454 Chevelle to school where she taught class. My dad used to put winter studded tires on the Chevelle and sand bags in the trunk around the rear wheel wells. He said that the hills were the tough part...it took many attempts to get up them :)

Frank75:
The Corvette doesn't have 50/50 weight distribution does it?

I only ever had the 'Vette out in the snow once. I drove it to school (was a beautiful day in the morning)....in the afternoon we got some snow! We probably got about three inches and I had to baby her the whole way home. At least none of the salt/ash trucks were out. It took a few attempts and a running start to get the 'Vette up my driveway and into the garage.....never again.

Ken, we got a huge snowfall here as well on the mainland - drove the Z28 to the bar but had to leave her parked - 275/35/18 Michelin Summer tires could not cut it    .

I went up north during the winter & there was not enough snow there for me so my g/f knew where to find plenty of snow. No real problem due to the 50/50 weight distribution. Those little iced bridges can be fun at speed. Gets a little sideways, a quick twitch of the st. wh. fixes.
We went everywhere in the Vette & got lots of attention. They didn't use the salt trucks there.
BB iron head wt. would hurt. All GM are made to allow for chains, that's why all the tire/fender clearance. 911 & VW beetle are said to be good in snow & would expect so.

Bence - don't have the specs right here, but it's typically within +/- 1% if I remember correctly...

Many (many) years ago, my best friend in high school had a '74. He drove that thing year round here in the midwest. Can't tell you the number of times we had to call a tow-truck to pull us out of a snowbank.......'course, that could have had something to do with the beverages we were consuming while driving around!!!

I lived in Colorado when I owned my 70, and I drove it to a couple of ski areas in the winter. It also handled very well in the rain. I also had a 78 SA before the 70, and it was squirlly on dry pavement! I think the alingment on the 70 was perfect and the 78 wasnt. 70 didnt eat tires and 78 did. Never could get it right.

Has anyone had any problems with the fiberglass freezing in the night? Going to college and living in Nebraska, I'm worried about the fiberglass getting too cold at night, and cracking or something in the morning. (Temps can get to 50 below windchill here.) Any stories?
-Paul

P.S. Since I'm at college, the 'Vette would have to be outside for weekdays.
