Question: Dual Air Snorkel for 1980 - Missing side
1980 L48 200R4 (Engine is stock)
When I bought the vehicle the side snorkel tubing was missing from the vehicle so it is sucking air from the engine compartment. I do have the front vent tubing in place
Is this a problem performance or possible damage? And is it worth buying the parts to put back on the vehicle?

It is said that the dual snorkel cold air intake provided 5-10 HP. It's not going to hurt anything by not having that tubing in place but maybe a little bit of HP that you will not feel. I would buy the part and install it.

all you need is a 30 dolar intake duct correct? or is the side and front plastic intakes missing too?
you are correct it is sucking hot air in as compared to if it were working correctly

GM factory actually quotes those numbers. its not some independant guy in a shop somewhere with a K and N filter so there must be credibility to it. and again as we know colder air means more GO!! and from where it pulls it in from originally compared to where its pulling now could only help you!

Having the cold air ducts in place forces air entering the front thru the radiator. If those parts are missing air will follow the path of least resistance and flow around the radiator into the engine bay, reducing the cooling capacity of the system. That is why there are also rubber seals across the top of the radiator, across the cold air ducts, and down the sides of the radiator. Again to force air thru the radiator. You won't notice any heating problems in the winter, but in the summer this could cause some overheating problems; especially here in the South. The cold air ducts also provide colder more dense air for combustion creating a few more horses.

Chey Bowtie can hook you up. There was another chevy overdrive tranny that fits better than the 400 in the C3. It is a metric tranny and I believe they came in the later mid size chevys. There should be plenty of info on them if you do a search. Good luck on your choice.

I love the 200R4- the overdrive is awesome- I can drive down the highway now and not feel like the engine is going to explode at the hi rpms it took to go 70. Yes I did the conversion myself and it was my first one- was not all that hard just took step by step. I also did it with no special tools or lifting devices.
