H.P. Street/Autocross Tires; Goodyear Eagle GT 2's or BFG Radial T/A's?
Hello Fellow C3 Owners;
Can anybody help me with some feedback on which Brand performs best as a dual purpose tire on a 70' Vette. The size will be 235/60/15 or 255/60/15
on aluminum wheels. Also, will 255/60/15 fit on the front without any clearance or rubbing problems.
On a "tight" budget. Thanks GENE

I woudn't consider either much of an autocross tire, both are a fairly hard compound of course either will wear for a fairly long time as a result. 255/60r15's will normally fit on front but may rub and parking brake cable may have to be tied out of the way on the rear with the 255's. I'm sure the 235's will clear no problem front and back but of course you won't have as much meat on the ground either. I had BFg's on my 73 when i got it, i sell the GT2's at work and have them on my mother's 3 series beamer, hard to compare a 73 with a 454 compared to a little 318 beamer but the Gt2's deffinitly do better on the beamer then the BFG's did on the vette but your talking apples and oranges as far as chassis goes. I switched to 16" tires and wheels becouse I couldn't find any real good performance tires in 15" that were both sticky, handled well, and had a good speed rating.

I have 255/60/15's all the way around and have not had any problems with a rub, or the parking brake. I might just be lucky, but I'm not complaining :)

For what it's worth, I felt I had better straight line traction with 235-60-15 Radial T/A's then my 245-45-17 GForce T/A KD's. And if you go by the treadware ratings the 17 are supposed (obviously) to be softer.

goodyear=#1 name in sucky tires. sorry to offend anyone, i just have had terrible luck with goodyears. if you have to stay with the 15" wheel, i would suggest the b.f. goodrich radial t/a. i have them on my 15" wheels and they wear well, take a lot of abuse and seam to stick as well as any other 15" tire i've seen (short of my dayton racing slicks!). the last time i bought 15" street tires, and that was a while ago, goodyear didn't even have a 255/60-15 and there was no way i was going to put the 225/70-15 on if i could help it. as far as i'm aware you can still get the radial t/a as wide as 295/50-15 although i think the 255 is as wide as you can fit without rubbing. my advice (and it's worth just exactly what your paying for it) is to save your pennies and get a set of 17" wheels. performance tires will still be around well after all the 15" molds have been made into tercels.

I asked a dealer about BFG TA's he said the Comp tire is the performance tire. The TA's not a performance tire just a nice looking sidewall. They no longer produce the Comp. I agree with Pat I wouldn't use either one. Chuck

Gene,
Probably the best 15" hipo street/autocross tire you are going to find is the Yokohama AVS Intermediate. The most appropriate size they make that will fit a C3 is 235/60R15. These tires are "V" speed-rated which also makes them one of the highest-speed capable 15" tires you can get. As a bonus, they are also pretty economical. Tirerack sells them for about $80/piece.
Good Luck.

Save your money for larger wheels & lower profile tires. The 17's made a hugh difference in handling for my car. I tried Goodyears, then BFG's in the 15's first & I liked the BFG's better. I say the 17" Bridgestones have been by far the best so far :) .

My experience with the BFD (oops I mean G) TA is they have all the traction of a Big Wheel Tire (reference to kiddie riding toy) They are excellent street tires for durability and good looks, as performance goes its a relative thing - I think the performance in the t/a is more of a performance appearance and reputation than the real thing.
Never used the goodyears so cant comment - liked the old Eagle GT backin the 80's havent used em since.

I agree with the others here. BFG Radial T/As are a muscle car tire. For autocross, taller wheels and shorter sidewalls are a prerequisite.

I have the BFG 255-15's on my car. I like them a lot for what I'm using them for but, if I were autocrossing, I'd definely select a different tire/wheel combination to eliminate as much tire sidewall as possible. For regular street use, I'm happy with what I have.

Dear Pat: Thanks for your input. Unfortunately, I'm unable to move to a 16" or 17" wheel at this time due to cost. For 02', I'm stuck with 15". Thanks Again

I've been running Goodyear Eagle GT 2's for a while now. (255/60/15) I've had no problem with rubbing and they perform great. I'm going to stick with them when I get a new set, hopefully this summer if $$$$ allows.

I have 255/60 T/A on the '69 and they seem like nice tires but stickey they aint.
I run Drag radials on the track which stick pretty good, One day I decided to try the T/A's and they were like glass!, I was all over the place! :U
