When degreeing the cam, you want to keep the timing chain tight in the direction of rotation as well.

If you are "dialing in" TDC with a dial indicator on top of the piston (heads off) to set your degree wheel, you still want to turn the crank in the direction of rotation - Backing up may give false readings on your dial indicator as well.

Piston stops screwed into the spark plugs are not a great way to establish TDC IMO - Might as well just rely on your balancer marks.
i have to respectfully disagree with the dial indicator method for finding exact tdc with the heads off...you should use a piston stop and go one direction to the stop and mark the balancer or reference point and then go backwards to the stop and make another mark....measure between the marks and divide that # by 2 and you have EXACT tdc... you can use a simple flat plate bolted to the block for this procedure...if you use a dial indicator, the piston will "dwell" at tdc for several degrees of crankshaft rotation before the piston drops....

you must hit the center of the dwell..hence "TOP DEAD CENTER"

Hi Ben,

How is your car? All finished now?

P.S. I went with a new Scat 3.75" crank and it will be polished in the shop during machining. SOMETIME in the near future.
