Are you going by the tach on the dash? If so its probably not correct because I dont think you would like it much unless your talking about neutral idle..I think its around 600 -700in drive.I usually adjust it around there and also where it feels good.

The EPA sticker on the firewall should have idle specs for your engine. If you don't have one, it should be something in the area of 500-600 rpm in neutral with manual tranny, and 650 in neutral with automatic and 500-550 with automatic in Drive. You burn a LOT of fuel with 1200 rpm (or higher) idle speed. Folks are more impressed with a "loping" engine at normal idle speeds than something just spinning faster....

My 75 (auto) idols around 500-600rpms, and almost sounds like its gonna stall. (it doesnt though). I was wondering the same thing, but ive got a demon 750 carb and edelbrock heads/intake. perf cam, and few other stuff. Should I try new plugs? they probably havent been changed in 3 years (NGK's).

A cold idle is in that range and completely normal. But not when hot.
