72 Wiper door molding screws
I've read that the wiper door molding for a 72 has screws instead of rivets like earlier models at the ends. Does anyone have a picture of those screws? Trying to decide if I could drill out the rivets and put in screws. Or were the holes in the wiper door different in some way?
Looks like the wiper door my dad threw in when I bought the car from him was from a different car.

Hi B,
From my 71….. not sure about 72?
Regards,
Alan
Fender trim…. people say it's the screw that GM used to attach ss wheel opening trim to fenders on many cars.
Wiper door trim….countersunk flat head.

Thanks Alan. I agree on the wheel well molding screws. I sold a set of nos chevelle moldings that still had the baggie of screws and that's what they looked like.

I have owned my '72 for some 20+ years now, and that stainless trim as always been painted, and pretty sure it was naderized that way from the factory.....I am really seriously thinking of masking off and stripping the paint on the stainless.....the door is easy, it's the fender caps that are difficult.....
WHY,?? because I hate Ralph Nader to this day....so anything except seatbelts that Nader wanted is automatically bad for the car....
which is why I have an OEM '72 CHROME hornbutton/lock ring on my car.....guess what, even in FLORIDA in the AM morning glare...I have NEVER been blinded.....
so to do the trim......to match the rest of the windshield......

All factory promotion photos of '68 thru '72 C3's [that are available to me] show the stainless trim at the base of the windshield as painted, except for the 'bead' on the inner edge.

Anyone who chimed in want to chime in with pictures of what their screws look like? Ralph Nader didn't make the change from rivets to screws too, did he?

68's had the wiper door molding riveted at the ends. 69-72's used a Philips head sheet metal screw, similar to the windshield molding clip screws.
A quick look on line turned up these at Paragon. It's been years since I've seen a known original, unmolested, 68-72 wiper door, but these screws look correct from what I remember.

Hi gb,
NOTHING would surprise me concerning fasteners so I thought I'd ask in case you'd actually seen that!

Alan

Hi,
I'm sure the 2 types of screws in my pictures are original to my 71…. but that only 'guarantees' that's what was being used THAT day.
They do however seem to be pretty typical of those I've seen on original cars of that era.
Regards,
Alan

The 'usual' screw is a flat-head sheet metal screw with Phillips drive and black phosphate coating.

Hi B72,
The 2 screws used on the ends of the trim on the wiper-door are flathead, counter sunk, cross-recessed Philips drive.
The screw on the end of the fender trim is an odd one, cross-recessed, slightly domed, and with a VERY small flange on the perimeter of the head.
The screws being sold now for this application have a larger flange.
Regards,
Alan
The configuration of the screw's head being sold by some of the venders for this application…. quite unlike what was on my car.

Seeing the original rivet helps a lot. Mine look like regular pop rivets, and since it was repainted I think I can assume the shop just threw those in.
