Default New 427 SBC Finally Done!!

After months of work (mainly waiting for some parts), the new engine is now built. This will replace the deceased 383 in the '69. Enormous thanks to Engine Masters competitor W.O.T. Inc. for the great job. Also thanks going to Bryce at Dr. J's for his excellent manifold porting.

Some quick specs:
Heads - AFR 210 Eliminators, competition ported, 2.08/1.60
Block - Chevy Bow Tie, w/roller cam bearings.
Disp. - 427" (4.185 bore x 3.875 stroke, = 426.4 cubes)
Pistons - JE Aluminum 2618 extra lite, 10.4 C.R.
Rods - Eagle
Intake - World Motown, full porting and matched to AFR 210's
Oil Pan- Milodon #30908, stroker low profile, 6 qts. + filter
Rockers - T&D Shaft, 1.6 int./1.5 exh.
Carb - Quick Fuel (Holley) 950
Cam - Custom (Specs confidential, but I can say that it is a solid roller
of 240/245 duration @ .050, with 4-7 swap).

See Dyno Results

Peak HP = 628 @ 6500 RPM
Peak TQ = 585 @ 4900 RPM
(455 ft-lb at a low 3000 RPM)

Pics

Surprising result - the drop base air cleaner in the pic yields 5 HP more than the the popular open top K&N lid. This is 5+ across the board from 3000 to 6500 rpm on several engines we tested. Also it is worth 10 HP more than no air cleaner at all.

Can't wait to install this puppy!

Buy an extra set of rear tires soon!

That will be a fun motor. Nice numbers on the dyno.

Very nice. What kind of wallet damage are we talking to build a bad boy like that?

thats because a carb. engine needs a drop base and pulls air in. those air filter lids disrupt airflow for the carb., great for t.b.i. though.

o ya, that engine is the most beautiful thing ive ever seen

WOw that's one smokin' motor, nice power your gonna like that

Similar build to mine. I am still waiting for my 227cc heads from AFR and the block from Motown

Couple of "unclassified" questions ?

Do you know the height of the World intake ? I went with the port matched Vic Jr. to fit under my hood.

Was it hard or easy to set up the T&D shaft rockers ?

Also what head gasket (specs too ) did you use ?

Thanks, Wayne

Very nice! That is real proof of big CFM heads only need a mild cam to make big power. You are going to have a hard time perfecting taking off from a slow speed Our motors are very simular and i always figured it for mid 600 hp and near 600 foot pound of TQ

Why did you only test to 6500?

I'm a little more proud of my 4.155 X 4.0 434 ci cam specs. 4/7 swap endurance road racing solid roller lobe profile with 248/250 110 .685/.715 lift with 1.7 rockers

awesome results.... incredible results, especially torque figures for a normally aspirated small block ..

question though... fair difference in A/F ratio between left and right banks ???
Is there an issue with inlet manifold fuel distribution?
or is it a case of instrumentation error? cal error for dual O2 sensors?

Excellent results .

IMO - Straight orderly flowing air is always best. When somebody tells me that no air cleaner gained some HP figure. It could only be caused by not enough sq inches of free flow element. K&N 3 X 14 filters are big enough.

I also have the Motown intake manifold with a 1/2 inch 4 hole wood thermal spacer. The problem is hood clearance. It is a very tall manifold

I read your profile:

Other goodies:
4.11 Rear , Art Carr 10" 2900 RPM stall converter
Wilwood brakes (Dyna-Lite calipers)
380 LB. VBP composite rear spring

I also went from a 383 to a 427. One area of concern might be lockup up clutch. I had the 9.5 inch Art Carr 3 lockup clutch converter. Even with the extra holding power of more clutch sq. inches the 427 burned them out doing some WOT at high speed in OD. They just can not handle the near 600 foot pounds of TQ. That is one of the reasons for the change to the TKO600 5 speed. I'm also rethinking my 4.11 rear end gears towards 3.08 with the .82 OD
