Default WooHoo!!!!! Engine block is home!!!!! Looks GREAT!!!

They had to takeabout .005 off the deck. It looks better now than it did the day it was bored. Also had new cam bearings installed and ordered a competition roller backed timing chain because mine the other style had been rubbing the block. What ya think???

Just curious , can you deck a block .005 and not remove all of the stamped numbers?

FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!! I was considering doing the same process w/ my 355ci mouse. How much of a difference does that make on the engine? And is that the "standard policy decking it @.005?"
I have seen others that have the same deck. Please explain it in a nutshell.

LOL if only I could..... But I am going to put a huge dent in the work this weekend. I have to find a place tomorrow that sells the clevite CP series bearings. I am also going to the Charlotte Auto fair tomorrow at Charlotte Motor speedway and look for a degreeing kit or the individual peices.

Honestly I really don't know. I had to have this done because of the previous machine shops screw up. the cylinder you see in the pic has a sleeve in it. the shop that did the origional work use a hand file or grinder to smooth down the lip. All the way around this cylinder had dips anywhere from .001 to .003. This kept the head gasket from sealing and the head bolt between #3 and #5 was pumping water into the cylinder. All in all the origional shop did a really bad job and the new shop was great! The motor only had 300 miles on it when I had to pull it again.

I looked at mine and all the numbers are gone from it. In my case it was not a big deal as this was origionally a small block automatic car.

Hey BlackRat, glad things are moving quickly for you. I had to do the samething as you:sleeved one cyl. ( cracked ) booken piston ( same cyl )
got the motor decked ( numbers gone, matching numbers, long story )
and I bought a Classic Chevy 5sp and made my crossmember removable. Waiting on the radiator support. Been down 9 months now. Hoping to get it running this month. Good luck. Some pics.

Thanks 69 convertible! Your crack looks a lot like the one I had. I got my block with the crack already in by trading an old set of SB heads. Your block looks a lot better than mine did after it came back from the machine shop. I learned a lot on what to look for and ask when searching out a quality machine shop. Unfortunately I learned it after the fact and the hard way.

Good news Wade. Glad to see it looking so good. When it all comes together I am sure you will love it. The Keisler is going to be a great addition to the whole package. I love mine for sure.

A good shop can deck a block and leave the numbers intact. They don't ike to do it because it's a lot of extra work. They have to stop the cutter right before the numbers and take care to set the block to where it cuts as much of the sealing surface as possible without hitting the numbers. Then they have to use the gasket and hand-cut the last small spots the cutter didn't get to. So lots of work, but it's doable.

My 454 block had to be decked a lot as it was cut crooked from the factory. It was 0.017" different height front to back.

Mine was cut .020. Like zwede, it was warped from the factory. Needed that much to make it flat. So for all those that plan to have their block decked and want to keep your number intact, make sure you get that in writing. for them NOT to cut the numbers. Make sure they can do like zwede said. Like they say, hindsight is 20/20. Tony

Looks great. It will be interesting to see where the deck height actually ends up at this time around. Tight is good!

I forget...did it turn out tha there was a lip at the bottom of the cylinder to hold the sleeve or not?

Honestly I don't know I will have to look tomorrow. The owner of the shop said that overall the sleeve was put in correct but that they got in a hurry or got lazy at the end and tried to hand level the top. The block held 150 psi constant with no leaks anywhere. The owner actually fussed at the machinist for putting that much pressure to it because the freeze plugs could become projectiles...

I also asked him about valve to piston clearence sense I had both the heads and the deck shaved and went with the larger cam. He said that I should have no problem but as always check to make sure. He had a 454 in th shop they were building for another guy and he is running the same hyper pistons as mine. The cam in that one is a flat tappet solid .650 and they had plenty of room.

Double check PV clearance anyway. Your cam is on a 108 LSA and is pretty aggressive...plus you'll have it installed advanced into the 103-105* range. All of that adds up to possible PV issues..especially on intake side. Lift isn't usually an issue...it's the early opening stuff.
