Looks great!! I'm getting stuff together for a 496. '

One question-- I saw you set your rear main clearance at .003. Why so big? The reason I'm asking is that I've seen engines from the factory, both SB and BB with the rear bearing down to .0015 for better oil control. (less leak at the rear main seal)

Rear main is also a thrust bearing and in a stick car you want to get lots of oil over the back side of the bearing where the crank makes contact with it, even in an auto.

THis is the reason some people like to open up the oil clearance on the rear main. This is just one opinion, there are many theories and opinions out there

.0015" on any main is asking for trouble, again only my opinion

Just a question

And with the longer pushrods, you will NOT be able to thread those "Kool nuts" on those sexy roller-rockers.... If you do, you'll have only a few threads holding the rocker in place, and that'll last... Oh, maybe 3-4 seconds of running time, before they shoot off the top of the engine...

Did you ever use longer ARP studs? I had standard ARP studs for and engine build and the lock nuts would only have a few threads just like you mentioned. So I used longer rocker studs and was able to use correct length pushrods

Shoot a note to Pef427 here on the Forum. He has a 598" tall deck in his '68. He did some relatively minor header changes and got them to work fine. He can help you with all the other fitment issues too.

How would i go about measuring this or is there any thing to look for in "raised ports"?

Do you still have the OEM iron heads on it?

The tall deck gets in the way of everything. Usually some issues behind left head and headers are moved outward. I think right ones do pretty decent....and left needs a little tweeking. Pef427 Has Dart heads with raised ports...so he has a worst case scenario going.

All the info I have on the heads are here

Now, the cylinder head details...

I'd thought I had scored a smokin' deal, by finding a set of recently-rebuilt heads off Ebay for just under $500, including shipping. Allegedly, they'd been fitted with Edelbrock Performer RPM flat-tappet springs, and the heads had been worked on, given a port-job, gasket match and the heads had been shaved and reworked to 106 cc's. The heads had indeed been ported, and the springs looked relatively new... However, since I wanted to clean the carbon out of the ports and check valve-guides, I decided to pull 'em down... I bought a valve-spring compressor from Pep Boys (since I didn't have one), a little hand-operated twisting affair sort of thing... It didn't work, as the inner spring damper kept slipping off the hooks.
Deck height came in at .042". I'll be using the large oval-port cylinder heads, with 2.19/1.88 valves, and 106cc chambers. Head gasket thicknesses are .031, and with the camshaft I bought (a Comp Cams XR276 Hydraulic roller), the static compression ratio comes out to 9.37:1, and dynamic compression ratio of 7.6:1.

What does
Deck height came in at .042".
Mean?

"Large oval port" for header consideration should just call these rectangular or no?

Thanks again all.

Ps Ive been searching for answers for some time.

Nothing. I finished the vet, sold it.(motor was too much for it...) Bought a chevelle frame off protour'd it and was about to install the engine when I came across a IRS frame for my chevelle.... Need a RHS Ls based block for (mounts will be welded in frame so no going back...) , so up for sale....

Im not really to bent on selling it cause 500 hp could go into anything. Considering getting another chevelle to put it into and "DRIVE" something while waiting on $$$$ eater...

But would like to fund project so will entertain SERIOUS offers.
