I'm thinking of buying a numbered block for my 74. Right now it has a re-manufactured short block. It only has about 500 miles on it and it runs strong, but it doesn't match the heads, manifold, ect. The car is about 90% stock - everything is there except the engine block. I was thinking of getting a matching number L48 and stroking it out. It would of course have all the good stuff inside but look bone stock outside.

OK, everyone has their reasons why and their own opinions, but this won't be a matching numbers block since it won't have your vin on it. It WOULD ONLY be the correct casting number and hopefully it has a cast date near the build date of your car to even make it worthwhile. Unless you are trying to have this car judged per NCRS guidelines and need a few points for at least having the correct block casting, IMHO, it really isn't worth the money. Now if this was a midyear or chrome bumper big block, that is another story but again, only if you are after points.
If you are real serious, call Engines Limited in Wisconsin for a block and have the numbers restamped on it. It would still be a fake and easily detected.
I would spend the money on parts myself.
