Default Picture Request: Frame crossmember with crank pulley cutout...

Hi guys,

Need a picture of the frame cross member from the top standing where the engine goes.

Trying to figure if the General used the same bracket for the lower control arm on both sides. Find it hard to believe... but thats what the parts folks are saying.

(Mines buried in a few pounds of bubba's welding.)

Thanks!

Hey John,

Thanks!

I'd like to know how you decided where it ought to go... The side thats torn doesn't have a whole lot of shims, but the other has got a few more than I'd like.

Trying to decide to put it back in the same spot, or find where its supposed to go.

Be sure to bolt the lower control arm bracket back in place to be certain it's straight before welding up.

There are the two bolt holes that go through the lower support, then through the frame. The lower support will still be on place so when it's bolted up it will tighen right down onto that lower mount. Be sure to weld the sides of that upper to the lower as well.

Since your doing this and you obviously have a welder or access to one, you should strengthen that area...and the other side of the xmember where the two bolts bolt up from the a-arm crossshaft.
I went a little crazy with strengthening that area after reading about how those little peices lift right off after some serious suspension movement.
I rewelded the seams and then put this plating in.
Please note that the plating on the right side had to be grinded for mechanical fuel pump clearance.

Good luck

Thanks 68...

Man, thats a lot of plating. What gauge did you use? I was considering boxing the underside of the engine mount horns, and running solid mounts... but it looks like the bar has been raised!

Thanks John,

I'll disassemble the control arm ahead of schedule and bolt the shaft up... Did your piece come pre-drilled for the rear bolt? Mine is all smooth black metal. Pondering using the bolt hole in the shaft as a guide to pickup the center point of the hole, but its gonna be a weird position unless I build a rotisserie.

Don't remember what size gauge I used. Boxing the engine mounts is a good idea, no need to use solid motor mounts though, unless your running so much hp/tq that you want to use the engine block as a frame stiffening xmember.
I'm running energy suspension poly motor mounts.

Hi, I dont want to hijack your thread, but I am currently doing a body off resto on my 68 BB Convertable, I need to replace this control arm mounting bracket on the RHS. The old one is too baddly damaged and distorted to repair.
My question is can I buy this bracket, and if so where from?

I can't find it in any parts book (ecklers etc) I have, or searching the net. I live in Australia so I can't get it locally.

I thank you in antisipation.
