Default '79 and problems passing smog in California

Hello all...this is my first post and I have a 79 Corvette.

I'm having a problem passing smog. I passed 2 years ago and now she doesn't pass.

The mechanic said my ERG valve won't work because the hole in my intake where the EGR recirculates the gas back into is welded shut!

Sure enough it looks that way...but I passed 2 years ago!

Not sure what to do at this point....any suggestions? My Haynes manual only shows detail for the 1980 and up emissions...but little detail for the '79

thanks

John...

It could also be the catylatic convertor. My 82 also kept failing and everything on engine was new. I put on a performance convertor and gained a few horses also. My convertor on my 99 s-10 just died with 70K.
Good Luck

Thanks for the input Steve, however...the cat is new...

Was wondering if anybody knows about the ERG hole in the intake and wheather or not is should be open or not...

Is there an O2 sensor in a 1979?

thanks again...

Did you fail the visual or the test itself. How did he know it was welded shut? Try another place.

No o2 sensor in a 79 I think what the mechanic may have been saying is that there may be a build up of crud in the EGR hole...the intake may have to be removed for a cleaning having the carbon crud removed.

Pull off the valve and clean out the hole. The whole design isn't the greatest especially if you have an alum. manifold.

Did you fail on CO or HC? Post the numbers (along with the pass criteria), and I can tell you how to tune it to make it pass.
