Default fly eye aircleaner

Does anyone know the height, from where the base sits on the carb to the top of the highest point?

Thanks
Chris

Did you get a chance to measure the height before your car burned up?

Seriously, those things are a bad idea, as bad as the glass fuel filters.

About the only cars they're safe for is a street rod with no hood. Even then I wouldn't use one.

Glass fuel filters are OK...it's the clear plastic ones that are notorious for going "kablooey."

You have got to be kidding???
I stole my 79 from someone because they used a glass one and burnt the whole front end up on their car and couldn't buy it back from the insurance company, but I could.
On second thought go ahead and use a glass filter, I could use another vette to fix up!!!!!!

The glass ones are notorious for doing the same thing. Years ago I watched a friend's Charger burn to the ground because of a glass fuel filter! I never even knew that clear plastic ones were made, they can't be too safe either!

You guys can't imagine how glad I am about how concerned everyone is for my safety.

If you guys go way back to my orginal post, there was nothing in there about how flammable thos Motion style aircleaners are and certainly nothing about glass fuel filters.

Seems like everyone's had a friend who's car burned up. My '88 had a dash fire from a failed ignition wire. My car, not a friends. So, you guys should make sure there's no wires in your cars, otherwise your car will burn.

If those aircleaners were so dangerous, there'd be no Motion or Yenko cars left...they'd have all caught fire long ago.

So, if everyone gets my point, lets move on, well, let's move back to the original question. Does anyone know the height of this aircleaner?

Thank you
Chris

Chris,

I ran one of these on my 69 GTO for years with no problems. The car is gone, but I still have the air cleaner. It is very shallow, and I just measured it, 3 inches even from the mounting surface to the highest point on top. There are several styles or types out there, do not know who made mine.

My friend was using one of those air clearners in his 63 split window...he had a backfire thru carb.. the resulting fire ruined his hood, and melted part of his carb....we had warned him,but he did not listen...

Longbros, thank you for your response that actually answered the one question I asked.

As for everyone else that posted about fires, exploding fuel filters and anything else dangerous that may happen in a car.....

I've heard all about friend's cars that did this and that. Think about that...I hear it from you guys who heard it from someone else and so on.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here or anything. I'm just tired of this attitude the world has that everyone knows what's best for me. I'm a real American, where I actually don't like it when someone else decides what's best for me, what's safest for me, and how I should act. I didn't spend 6 years of my life defending freedom so I can hand it off because it's a little safer and I don't want the responsibility. I don't tell people not to put a hood scoop or fender flares on their car because it looks stupid, so nobody should tell me I shouldn't put an aircleaner on my car because they heard of a friend that had one catch fire.

While we're at it, we should go to communist....i mean socialist...i mean socialized medicine, curfews, and full gun control. Ya-vol, mein fuhrer!!

Me, I'm going to go drive with no seat belt while smoking a cigarette ashing in an open container of gasoline in the passenger seat.

If my car burns, that the risk I take and I will blame no one but myself. In fact, I'll go buy another vette and dump more money into parts spuring on the economy of my beloved country.

In another post, I'll ask about how safe those filters are so you guys can actually rant on topic.

Long story short, I'll do my own research and determine how safe those airfilters are. Paper and cotton air filters burn too, but nobody seems scared of those K&N filters that have the filter for the top of the aircleaner.

No problem there...don't wear my seatbelt....let the flaming begin....

I just get sick that I get 12 posts with only one that actually answered a question I asked. I'm tired of this overly safe world and people who are scared of life trying to impress their boring safe lives on me.

If you guys were trying to help, I would have gotten the measurement I asked for, not a string of lectures on how to live my life safe and sound like all of you guys.

So let me get this straight, all of you had your cars burn to the ground by either a glass fuel filter or a fly eye aircleaner. This is an accurate statement, right?

Otherwise you guys are talking about things you heard from a friend of a friend or however long that chain goes.

Now I know why there's a show called Mythbusters. In fact, maybe I need to suggest a good topic for them...fly eye aircleaner fires and exploding fuel filters. It'd make a great episode, I think.
