official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit)
Many of us later model (and earlier model) c3 owners have planned on or have finished doing things to their car to add HP. The most common I see without diving into an engine, is a intake/carb swap. All C3 owners know what a wonderfully tight spot we have under hood, even though its a mile long. I just want to make it official as to what we can squeeze under a stock hood. Also how did you make it work without going to the a L-88 or high rise hood. This is mostly for '73(???) and later cars that don't have options for big block hoods, or wiper doors.
I want to know what you have fit under your stock hood, and how you made it fit without cutting a hole in the hood, or swapping it out. I think this will be a good post for people looking to do intake swaps later on but are scared because of the horror stories about room(like me). Also if you have pics, do not hesitate to show us.
Thanks;
Daniel
PS. try not to be confusing, I get lost easily  , and I want to build some sort of official bank with proof of making things fit with drop base cleaners, or whatever...

Re: official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit) (daniel77350)
okay today i put on a edelbrock performer 2101 and a edelbrock qjet performer replacement carb....
its a 76 vert btw...
my 2 3/4 inch mr gasket air cleaner was making an imprint on the hood matte so i ordered a drop base moroso racing setup that cost 40 bux at summit racing and comes in a spiffy anodized blue woohooo..
it only protudes 2.5 inches above the carb ...
however im gonna be sneaky and put a 2 inch element on it and get another inch drop on it......
should be plenty o room now!!!

i know the stock fits :jester
I'm going to try and fit a 3101 edelbrock under there with either the stock carb or a speed demon... havent desided yet
I'm pretty sure it will fit, but i dont know anybody with a demon under the hood, i dont mind being a guinea pig :smash:

hahahaha
no its not a convertable since the last ones came in '75.....

I'm using a Performer RPM Q-jet #7104 and a drop base K&N extreme lid with a 2.75 in filter #KNN-66-3040. It does not hit the hood at any point. This is on a 78 with stock hood :flag :flag :flag :flag :flag :flag

I have a '69 small-block (with correct hood). Underneath it is a Weiand 3000 (no idea on it's specs) which is a high-rise dual-plane. I have a gasket, sealing plate, and another gasket, and then the Holley 4150 (Street Avenger). There is a drop base air cleaner with a 2" tall K&N filter and the stock top. It "just" clears the hood. I mean by just a teensy bit.

My '79 L48 has;
Edelbrock Performer model 2101
Stock Quadrajet with thin gasket.
Edelbrock model 1221 3" drop base 14" diameter air cleaner.
Imprints on the heat shield on the hood.

That's a great idea-- how do you plan on posting the results? I am wondering if there is a drop base air cleaner that allows the RPM intakes to fit, particularly the RPM Air Gap Vortec.

Re: official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit) (thebruce)
I'm running an Edelbrock Performer with the stock Q-Jet and air cleaner on an '80.
I do, however, want to move to an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap, so this thread is of great interest.
Motorhead is someone that's pulled it off. His input would be great. :D

Re: official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit) (thebruce)
I bought the car with a performer spreadbore and holley 4779, with a drop bas air cleaner.
I had to add a 3/4" spreadbore to squarebore adapter to the intake and still had no problems (I purchased the car with a SS plate under the carb, the throttle blades would catch on this plate, and you'd be stuck at WOT... not good at all  ).
I then bought the RPM Air-Gap, which is .70" taller than the performer and performer Air-Gap. (even though the Edelbrock catalog specifically states that the RPM manifolds will NOT fit under a "stock" vette hood-- This must mean it wont work with the stock air cleaner.)
Only problem with the Rpm Air-Gap is the vacuum port off of the #7 runner.
If you use a Holley Dbl pumper, you will either have to plug this port, and run the tranny module and brake booster off the back of the carb (as I did)...
Or, you will have to get a spacer, and then it probably wont fit under the hood.
In short, you can use the performer, and performer RPM, with no problems,
The RPM Air-Gap WILL fit under the hood, if you find an alternative source for vacuum.

Re: official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit) (MotorHead)
How much taller is the RPM Air Gap versus the RPM? I currently have the Performer RPM with a drop base air cleaner, 3" x 14" K&N and a flat top lid. The lid actually drops down about an inch so the wingnut and top of the stud are below the top of the lid. I actually bought two different air cleaners and used the drop base from one and the lid from another. I barely have clearance so I'm thinking about going with a 2.25" x 14" K&N with the X-Stream top like on Motorhead's. I'm hoping to switch to the RPM Air Gap if it's not too much taller than the RPM. Anybody have the measurements?
Thanks

Re: official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit) (sharklover)
Sharklover,
The RPM Air-Gap and performer RPM are of equal height, just like the performer and performer Air-Gap are of equal height.
The differance between the two is .70".
Also if you REALLY want the RPM Air-Gap, you'll need to figure out the vacuum, problem. (see my previous post earlier in this thread.)

I know the ZZ4 motor will fit under the stock 1980 hood using the factory Qjet and all of the factory air filter equipment. About 1/2 to spare at the front of the filter.

Weiand "Action Plus" dual plane w/stock Q-Jet,Edelbrock chrome cover w/3'' K&N will fit but had to saw off carb stud a bit, it pierced hood insulation on my '76.....

Re: official: what can fit under a stock corvette hood(what have you fit) (daniel77350)
Good topic!
I've run a Performer 2101 and Q-jet with 1/4" thick gasket under both stock air cleaner & 3"x14" dropbase air cleaner with 1/4" carb neck riser. Also Performer 2101 and Edelbrock AFB with thin gasket and 1/4" carb neck riser under both stock & 3"x14" dropbase air cleaner.
The drop base cleaner gives about an additional 1/2" clearance vs. stock.

I have a Performer 2101 with a Holley 4175 and still using factory cleaner with K&N filter top. (similar to Motorheads) The Holley sits up about 1/2" higher than the Q-Jet did plus I had to add a 1/2" spacer under the air cleaner to clear the vacuum secondary unit. I still have 1 1/4"'s to sparefor the hood seal to fit in.
