What are the best tires for a C-3?
I figured this might stir up conversation and I'm quite curious of what people in the forum think :)

I run BFG T/As due to good size selection, very good all around performance, high mileage and price. It's a very good value, IMHO.

Re: What are the best tires for a C-3? (flynhi)
My 79 came from the factory with 225/70 tires but I wanted to go with 255/60 instead. However, the 255/60's are prone to rubbing on the front if that option wasn't ordered from the factory and I didn't want to cut the fenders like the factory did so I decided to drop down to 245/60 in the front but stay with 255/60 in the rear (mega run-on sentence :) ). The only manufacturer I could find that made the same tire in both sizes was BFG so that's what I have on the vette, BFG Radial T/A. Depending on your year and what was on the vette from the factory and what has been done by previous owners, there are plenty of options.

If you´re looking for performance, there´s only one real choice.
Yokohama:
The Yokohama A032R is designed for the track and driving school participants. They provide great grip with a pronounced and very functional tread that's 8/32nds of an inch deep for improved wet performance. The tread design incorporateds large tread blocks with tapered edges to minimize wear and "chunking."
The only disadvantage is that it isn´t a quiet tire.
And you should have your car in a good condition, otherwise you risk braking somethnig due to it´s handling capacities which outperform every street tire available. It´s twice as good in the rain as normal tires, but it´s not an all season tire, of course.....
I´ll buy this tire in the dim. 255/50/16 Z-rated. Price at tirerack 159 $
which is a very good price IMO

TA radials. I don't like them but they are the cheap, have a good selection of sizes. My last pair 305-50-15 were only $85 CDN. That is a good price but they are rated mud and snow and I don't even drive in the rain. I find they do not have good traction on the dry and when they break loose it is without warning. I really like the Mickey Thompson sportsman Pro wrinkle wall street tire but the tread life is nothing and they were $500CDN a pair. No expressway cruising and I was always afraid of getting a flat with the very thin lightweight construction but they didn't squeal and had great traction.
Drag radials look wore out after a few months. I sell my old tires every year and put on fresh.

If you're talking 15" tires for stock wheels, then Yokohama AVS Intermediates would be hard to beat. They aren't the widest (largest 26" tall size is 235/60R15), but they are basically an autocross tire with DOT approval. Don't expect a soft ride or any all season performance, their main mission in life is to go around corners. The plain sidewall design will never win a tire beauty contest either.

I have Cooper Cobras on my 71. Like the way they stick to the road and they are a lot quieter than the Good Years I had on the car. I replaced the noisy Michilens on my 97 Ram Van with Copper tires.

What do you want to do with the tires? Are you looking for something round and black to hold the car off the ground? A max performance tire? A soft riding tire?
My educated answer is: It depends :)

I've been pleased with the Firestone Firehawks on my '79. Large block tread like the T/As. Not a hardcore performance tire but then again neither are the T/As. There is the Firsestone stigma which doesn't bother me. These tires are like new but if I replace them, I'll probably go back to T/As only because they are so common.
One unusual thing - I've been through about 20 Radial T/As on two different Camaros. When you burn 'em they don't squeal, they're quiet.

I was lucky enough to purchase some of the last Goodyear Eagle ST in 245/60-15's and they look and ride real good. Handle well in the wet to boot :yesnod:

my goodyears suck big time especially in the wet. I've had BFG T/A's on other cars and when I burn all the rubber off the eagles I'm going with T/A's :D

I agree with the majority, BF Goodrich Radial T/As are best because they look nice, ride well, and are fair in price.

I've had the 255/60-15 BFG T/As on my '81 for about 6 years, 30K+ miles, no problems. For a 15 inch tire, I think they handle well. No speed rating, of course. And they're cheap. But BFG isn't making them anymore, apparently. There seems to be a fair amount of old stock out there, so you can still find them.
My research has convinced me that the best 255/60-15 overall is probably the Firestone FireHawk (SS20? I think). Handling is rated slightly better than the BFG, has a better warranty, and is still being made. I plan to get a set when my BFGs are done, probably next spring.
If you like the 225/70-15 size, you have more choices, but still not a lot of high performance choices. If you're willing to go to 16 or 17 inch wheels, then you're in a whole 'nother world of high performance tires, where your only limit is your checkbook.

The low profile 17" tires made a HUGH handling difference for my car. I'm using the Bridgestone Potenza RE730's. They work great at autocross, and are rated well for rain driving ( just in case ;) ). Size 255/45/17 were sticky enough to snap my side axle on the street. :smash:

I do not know if these (255-60R/15s) are the best but I have been very pleased with them. Somewhat difficult to find these days.
