Default Shorty headers/block huggers

Is anyone running shorty headers or block huggers? My exhaust system is only one year old and I'd like to keep it while changing the headers to a less restrictive design.

Thanks

I don't believe there is any type of header that will bolt right in place of your stock manifolds, if that is what you are trying to do. Therefore, you might as well go for long tubes and modify your front pipes to fit.

But you may opt to go for the Factory Ram Horn 2" cast iron manifold wich is lots less restrictive than shorty headers. And an improvement over that would be the 2 1/2" Rams horn manifold.

We used to race in a street stock division and we ran the ported 2 1/2" ram horn and it flowed better than headers. The stock 2 1/2" Rams horn is really good and will last. Just my 2 cents.

I have an 80, that someone put the blockhuggers on. JUNK. They are pretty much touching the sparkplugs.

Check this out, stock cast iron manifolds that perform like headers.

I am running a set of 1 5/8" primary ceramic coated block hugger headers that I installed about three years ago. I had to "massage" the driver's side one where the primary tubes come together to clear the motor mount, but they still look new and I drive this car 10k miles / year. The performance difference over the stock '81 stainless steel headers was huge! I'm very happy with them, and with the fact that you can get them for about a buck and a half, what's not to love. God bless, Sensei

I have the Sanderson Ceramic coated block huggers.

Straight plugs. Fit right in. The plug boots are close but not touching.
They will not match right up to existing exhaust pipes, you may end up replacing the tubing in front of the cross member.

Where can I find these and are they a direct fit?

Leo001 above has given the link to Brezinzski. 160-C is the part number you want. Unless you have a built up engine, the ported units give a few more horses. 162s-C, Those are the ones we raced with. I have an 81 w shorty headers. At some point, im going factory side pipes w 160-c manifolds. yes, they should be a direct fit. they are corvette manifolds and i'm pretty sure they are the same length as the shorty headers. You will still need the heat riser valve as at least a spacer unless that is only 2", then modify your exhaust pipe on pass side.

Have fun

I've got Sandersons too. You can look all over, but you'll never get better quality. The flanges are so thick and milled so well, you don't need a gasket. Top quality welds...

I'm pleading ignorance here, but what is the difference between straight and angle plug heads?

Also, would my stock 350 L-82 have angle or straight plug heads ?

Are there headers that can fit both angle and straight plug heads?

ZMAN, is that your vette in the pic? If so, what side pipes do you have on there?

your L-82 should have straight plug heads. That means the spark plug is perpendicular (90 deg) to the cylinder head front to back. An angled plug screws into the head at an angle, front to back. Both are about horizontal to the ground. This is seen on more high performance, high compression heads because the combustion chamber is designed different than others and opens up the spark to better burn the go juice. Dont know all the particulars, has to do w valve angle also.

Yes, headers are available for each straight or angle. Some specify, some dont.

Not exactly sure, but mostly on the higher horsepower cars without emissions. Like I imagine 68-75 like that. But they will fit on any small block chevy. The difference is where they dump to the exhaust pipes has a 2.5" opening and should dump into a 2.5" exhaust pipe. And the others are 2" dump into a 2" pipe. What is the size of your exhaust pipes that your shorty headers dump into now?

Yeh man, that is a really hot set up. Done nice. Nice wheels too.
I had an 80 w factory sides and the fiberglass covers painted silver and inlaid black between the fins. Looked real awsome and were cool to the touch.

I like the "butch" look of your pipes. Different than the factory setup. Are they hot to the touch? Is your girl going to burn her pretty legs when she steps out of it? Or are they cooler near the back?

I may go that style this time, only concern is the heat.

On my new ZZ4 I used these ceramic coated ones from Patriot. They work with either straight or angled plugs and also with D-port heads.

Yep - there is a ton of heat coming off those babies. If they were any hotter, they would glow, but that's no difference than any exhaust pipe. Most women only burn their legs once. They might be 1 or 2 degrees cooler at the rear but it hardly makes a difference. But since the heat is on the outside of the car, the interior is much cooler.

You can get covers for them (like Harleys) if you're worried about burning yourself. Bangkok Dean has some nice ones...

Sounds like Patriot or Sanderson block huggers are the way to go. There are a couple of part numbers for the Patriot block huggers listed in Summit and Jegs. Does H8027-1 sound correct for the Patriot block hugger headers that have been described?
