Yes, pics and details would be appreciated. Especially since my heater is currently bypassed until I can get the new core installed.
I've heard two schools of thought...first, go in through the dash. Second, go in through the engine bay after pulling the engine...both sound involved.

It's a horrible job, but once you're done you'll think it's all worth it. I cleaned mine up and put new seals in the boxes and ducts, and now it blows REAL strong. Besides, once you're done you can join the rest of us in the wednesday night meetings of the been through the heater box job support group.

Just out of curiosity--If the car's engine is ouit and the engine bay A/C plumbing is already gone, how much of a job would it be to remove the heater crap (You know, the big box on the passenger's side of the firewall.) and everything associated with it? I know a plate would have to be fabricated to cover the hole but would it be easy delete all that stuff with the engine out?

Jack, that should be real easy since you can stand in the engine bay, especially since you are going to delete everything and make a plate(s). A lot easier to fit a plate from inside the bay then leaning over the fender.

If it's still apart, check the evaprator (the A/C part on the engine side) for debris. If it has spent any time outside in it's life, there are leaves and dust and funk in it. ALL the air for the heater/air cond. goes through it! If it is partially plugged, it reduces the volume and efficiency of the A/C. I agree wholehertedly on the duct repairs. It makes a big difference in performance.

Jack: The fire wall is fiberglass, you can just glass it up in place of a plate.

Back at working on the heater core this morning....I sure am glad I have two corvette supply shops here in Atlanta so I can drive over and pick up parts VS having to wait for mail......One big advantage to living in a City!!!!!!!!!! I am having to replace the heater control cable and then begin the task of putting this puzzle back together

Yep, that certainly is a job. I am glad I did mine when I had my dash and interior all out.

I am in the process of doing this same job on a buddy of mine's 80 Corvette. So far I have 7 hours into it and all I have left is to put the guage cluster & console back together. I swear that the heater core is the FIRST part GM installs when they build our cars!!! :) :)

How to build a Corvette in two easy steps:
1... Suspend heater core over assembly line
2... Build Corvette around it.
BTW, I'm a HCV (Heater Core Veteran). Mine blew about 2 years ago. And yes, mine has AC. It was such fun! :U

I have some photos of the process from when Tony's Corvette in Gaithersburg did the heater core on my '70 with AC. Best $400 I ever spent avoiding frustration. :D

Don't forget to to pressure test the heater core before installation. I did this to mine and it leaked around the piping and the corner of one of the tanks.
I had to resolder.

Well It is in and let me tell you it is blowing some warm air..!!! I can see why people put those shut-off valves on their cars.....Man it definently has some additional heat in the car..Now to find out how to do the shut-off valves..I will be in great shape!!!!....I can probably wait on that till spring though..It is starting to get a bit cooler outside
