Default Gear vendors overdrive

Anybody running one of these? I am seriously considering this for my 63. I have the Autogear M22 and I think this bolts right on and replaces the tailpiece. I know the driveshaft needs to be shortened. I am concerned about tunnel clearance. I want the M22 whine and 4 speed to maintain the "old School" look but Gear vendors overdrive handles 1200 HP and my trans is good behind my buddies 1100 HP 3 stage nitrous big block. I was originally looking at a Jerico or G-force but have they have some drivability issues on the street. Looking for bulletproof streetability like everybody.

A mear 20% reduction in engine speed for any streetable CAR speed is a poor bang for the buck.....forget the installation problems....

forgetaboutit....

gotta be at least 30% and more for that kind of bux.....

My buddy has the same setup you want in his 78. It's out of the car now but you're right, the DS is very short. It bolts up to the M-22 in place of the tailhousing.

Well it reduces my final drive ratio from 4.11 to 3.20. gives me 1 clutchless shift, the whole setup can handle over 1000 HP and should be extremely streetable. I know it is expensive but everything has been for this build.

Do you know if he had any tunnel fitment issues?

I was looking into installing one of these on my '81 before going with a 700r4. It did require some cutting in the tunnel to fit a C3. I assume it would probably be the same with a C2. I have some photos of an install they sent me. If you pm me with your e-mail adress, I'll send them to you. God bless, Sensei

by my calculator a 20% reduction would mean a 336 (roughly) rear, same as I had/have now with the muncie....and 80 mph cruise was like 4k rpm.... so 3200 or so....with GV OD....

and for that, they want pushing 3 grand for the total package installed??? I can't see it....

I CAN see a Keisler these daze...or a AOD....but the GV unit is surpassed these daze by other way to get there....

IMO....

28.6% difference!
M22 4-SPEED Close Ratio - showing clutchless options
Axle Ratio 4.11
Trans Ratio Final Drive Ratio
1st 9.02
Over 7.02
2nd 6.72
Over 5.23
3rd 5.25
Over 4.08
4th 4.11
Over 3.19
The real difference according to their website: In the 1/4 mile you get 1 clutchless shift. They say is good for up to 1 second on ET.( I doubt that) On the highway at 80 MPH a 4.11 is winding pretty hard. A 3.19 final drive ratio would be a real noticable difference. The downside is the price $2600. I am leary of the TKO. My dyno sim shows almost 700 HP and similar torque with the nitrous. I have heard of less power taking out the TKO's especially on the 4th to 5th upshift. (They are rated at 600 Ft Lbs) Also think the 5th ratio is too wide and the road race version doesn't give you as tall of final as this. I already got a ton wrapped up in this build and $2600 seems like a lot but the cruising capability will be much better with this as well as the fuel use plus lower ET's. An automatic is out of the question, Got to shift! Seems like the ticket but $2600

I really don't recall. He bought the car with it fitted but the interior was pulled apart and set up with gauges, sheet metal, racing seats, etc. Could very well be it had tunnel mods. I'm not sure how he got that whole unit out as one either.
I think if I was going with a OD I'd look at a 5 or 6 spd.

The one on their website for muncie is 28.6%. That still gives me a M-22 Rockcrusher with a 4.11. Plus an overdrive that will make me able to cruise 75 MPH at 3000 Rpm instead of 60 and be able to handle 700 hp and 700 Ft lbs my new engine should put out. I am calling on it tomorrow and see if any tunnel modification is nessecary to fit this. I am trying to stay with old school and the Autogear is brand new. I might just get it all together and do the GV swap later but it is easier now.

I don't understand this conversion for several reasons...

1) Expense

2) Stupidly long extension and poor fitment issues, you will need to severely hack up your car, and youhave to have a removalable crossmember. The OD adds close to a foot of length onto your Muncie.

3) Robs more horsepower, massive weight combined with rotating mass.

I did several of these for people. I think the old british Laycock design overdrive was cool in the day, but has absolutely no place in a muscle car. Oddly I've driven them and I have to say, I hate them. That just me.

If you want a 5 speed with an overdrive and want an M22 whine just get the new Richmond gear 5 speed with an overdrive and stop messing around.

I really want a M-22 5 speed! These have been on the drawing board for 2 or 3 years now at Auto Gear. I need the shifter in the stock location, Want more strength than the TKO, don't want the driveability issues with the G-force or Jehrico. Will the new Richmond handle 700 HP & 700 Ft Lbs.? Is it a bolt in with no tunnel fitment issues? Stock shifter location? It has a pretty low 1st gear. I did post this to feel out the viability of the install. I know the combo of the Gv od and Autogear will handle what I have. Thanks for the response! Are you distributing these?

I've got a borrowed one in my 79, with a 3:55 rear and a 2800 stall converter. RWHP= 471. Still learning how to drive it better, at the track.
First run using it equaled a .5 sec lower ET. Still learning. Cruising on the interstate, wonderful. Off the line, wonderful. Six speed auto trans, wonderful. I realy don't want to give it back to the owner.
GO FOR IT!!!

Any tunnel modifications required? .5 seconds is a big jump and the highway cruising sounds good to a guy with a 4.11

I bought one for my new Dodge dually... Some limitations that they did not tell me about until after they had my Money!!.... I sent it back

1) did not split 1st gear and will not take back torque from deceleration towing heavy!!!
2) derated my driveline form 1485 series U joints to 1350's (1485 yokes are not available yet)
3) They failed to send all of the parts for the job that they said were in the kit and I couldn't get a straight answer on some installation issues until I complained Loudly
4) 2006 and up Dodge has a medium duty Mercedes Benz tranny not NV5600 OD ratio is .79 Gear Vendors is .78 no effective splitting (need .50)

I tow a 26 ft Custom Exxis tag trailer 14,000 GVW (about 11,000 lbs loaded )and a 10T GVW tag trailer with a JD350 Dozer about 15,000 lbs loaded.

In the end the Exxis was to much for my little dually suburban's brakes (trailer brakes are in tip top condition). 4l80e tranny is a stout unit.

That said... go with the OD 4th gear set for the M22 or the new 5 speed.

I have the ROD 6 speed with Road race gearsets

I don't sell Richmond or Tremec products. but the Richmond does fit without any tunnel mods but the crossmember has to be removable and a mount fabricated. The unit will handle the power. Remember your torque output is split between the transmission and rear. The trans never sees the full amount of torque.
