How to gain 240 hp!
Just get your thermal efficiency equal to one!
I'm an engineering student currently taking Thermodynamics. I'm studying internal combustion engines. The thermal efficiency equation for the Otto cycle (4-stroke internal combustion) is:
thermal efficiency = 1-(1/(r^0.4))
where r is the compression ratio.
This means a 10:1 small block putting out 360hp is losing 240hp to Mean Old Mr. Heat Transfer! :reddevil I thought you guys might be interested in that.

Re: How to gain 240 hp! (427V8)
So All I gotta do is increase my compression to like 1000:1 to get 90%+ efficiency?!  :smash:
You'd save money on spark plugs though.

This is the principle behind the new ceramic coatings on combustion chambers and piston tops.
Unfortunately, as the saying goes, "How fast do you want to go, how much do you want to spend?"

His "Hot Vapor" engine? It's been awhile since I read about it, but I remmber it was quite an idea.

I read about it in Smokey Yunicks book "Best Damn Garage in Town". It's more of a biography, and probably lacking in the tehcnical detail that you, as an engineering student, are looking for. I don't know if there's any info on it in Yunicks' "Power Secret's" book, maybe someone who owns it can say.
