Does Edelbrock make a good carb?
A friend of mine has a 650 edelbrock performer carb that he will sell for about $100. I am not sure how good of a carb it really is. i was wanting a holley 650 double pumper, but this might work in the mean time. my engine is a 355 with vortec heads, KB rotating assembly with about 10:1 compression, Comp cam 268 grind, and a performer vortec intake. thanks for any help or suggestions,
Ryan.

Where'd your CCC system go? Just curious.
Edelbrock makes a good product, yes. But that carburetor isn't exactly the best performer, and can waste gas just as bad as a holley.

CCC system? what is that? i should prbly no this. for the carb i am mostly just looking for something that will be better than my Q-jet. it runs differently every day and has some kind of vaccum leak that i can't seem to get rid of. if i would be able to gain anything from the swap i would do it. oh and the Q-jet thats on it is off of a 1980 so its not electronicly controlled.

Your vacuum leak is probably a worn throttle shaft bushing. I am a believer in the Holley. Edelbrock's service sucks when you have a problem. My brother just bought a set of their stainless headers for his ls1 trans am. They were supposed to fit to the stock y pipe, but it didn't happen. This set was over $500. He tried to contact them, but they don't want to respond. It's very aggravating when this is his daily driver.

Everyone has their own ideas on carburetors. I myself am not a carb guy, but I can rebuild an Edelbrock with no problem. I like them for their simplicity. Also, I don't think Edelbrock made a 650. It's probably a 600cfm. Summit sell's a Carter thats a 650.

I have an Edelbrock carb on mine and it runs great and at 16 cents per litre for gas, I don't really care if it wastes some!
However, IMHO, I think the Rochester Quadrajet is a superior carby and I will probably go to one of them when I ship the car home (where fuel is NOT 16 cents per litre)...

The edel carbs are a remake of the carter-rochester carbs from the 60's. Chevy stopped using them on corvettes in either 1965 or 66.
They are not performance carbs. The q-jet replacements they make have truck metering rods in them. I have a 600cfm carb sitting atop my manifold (also edel) . I now have a block that is being readied for an 383. I have a mighty demon 750 mech secondary carb, and a Weiand Stealth manifold that has been sitting in my garage for over a year. Have not decided pistons and cam yet.

By the way, Holley has been building carbs since at LEAST 1907

Edelbrock is good bang for the buck. If you want straight performance then go Holly.
If you want to keep the stock look (air cleaner) then use Edelbrock because the factory air cleaner won't clear Holly's fuel bowls. You may have to trim the air cleaner a littele for Edelbrock.
That's my 2 cents!

At Carlisle the vendor selling mostly intakes and carbs, just beyond Building T, was telling me that Edelbrock no longer owns their carb business, that they're Edel's in name only and are made by Weber, probably by a third party supplier. He said that part of their business has changed hands at least four times to his knowledge.
He also showed me in his paperwork where Edelbrock has discontinued a considerable number of parts, including of course the rod I was looking for.
I've got a 600 Performer on my Jasper 350, but it certainly isn't a "performer". But like someone said earlier, they're very easy to work on or rebuild.....so long as the parts remain available.
I'm probably gonna swap out to a Holley Street Avenger before next spring though.
