GM also sells the ZZ454 which comes with pretty good aluminum heads.

The zz454 is a really nice streetable big block.

I just put on in to give my LS-5 a rest. Runs great and has a TON of torque.

Check Dobles GM performance parts for a great price. I found them to be the cheapest, and at the time they shipped it FREE!!!!!

My good buddy Chris had a 70 chevelle LS6 back in the day. It was truely on of the fastest cars I have been in. Power everywhere. Maybe the wayback factor makes it seem faster but thats how I remeber it.

I don't think so - it's pretty much an L72 with 27 extra inches.
Guys had to buy COPO/dealer built cars until then just to get the L72.
The shame is that the LS6 (or LS7) wasn't offered in the 70 Vette.

I own a 71 ls6 coupe, the limiting factor is the low compression and the 569 intake. You can add a 1 inch spacer to help, but very few after market intakes will fit. Dont forget that it also came with transistor ignition. I put in a comp cams extreme energy solid with 232/236 vduration @.050 and 553/568 lift with a 110 centerline. I have 16 inches of vacum @ 950 rpm, great cam, original is out dated. Car has run 12.65 @110 MPH. i WOULD ADD SOME COMPRESSION.the heads are very expensive to buy, and aftermarket have better flow than the originals, except they dont have that winters foundry mark on them!!!

Default Sounds like it would make the most sense to build it myself

Summitracing.com sells a bare 454 block that takes a mechanical fuel pump for $1200. I could get an aftermarket crank, rods and pistons.

From what I have been reading, the oval port heads are better for a street/torque motor, such as the 781 or the 049 heads. I would aim for a compression ratio of 10:1, using one of the above cam recommendations.

I would stick with the big block Corvette exhaust manifolds with a mandrel bent exhaust system.

One of the most fun cars I have ever been in was a 69 vette back in the mid 70s with an over the counter LS-7 inserted with 4.10s a 4sp & M & H slicks on the street it was a brute
Although a little hard on the hard to get avi fuel

I believe this was the only year that they did this. The LS-6 Chevelle (1970) was rated the 450 Gross, no net stated by GM. The drop in hp from70 to 71 was mainly due to compression, from 11.0 to 9.0 Of course there were other minor differences ( carb specs). And as others mentioned the 71 LS-6 had the aluminum heads. I have a friend who owns an original LS-6 Vette (and is the original owner) convertible-great car, dark green and beautiful.

It is also possible however that the '70 enginse were underrated for insurance purposes.

Yes, I think the 450 HP rating was at 5600 RPM. These pulled clear up to 6500 so there was a lot left on the table.
