Default pics new rear axle, 3.5' half shafts and offset TA from van steel...

hi, just finished the swap of new rear axle with HD differential (gears 4.11), 3.5' half shafts and offset TA, all from van steel, all pre assembled with tom's items and everything went in my '77 like soft butter on fresh bread

now my only weak link could be the stock 2.5' driveshaft, will it survive on street tires the 570hp of my 406ci? until now it did, even to a hillclimb race along 3.5 miles of winding road...

Default Sweet !!

Looks nice!!

With that much horsepower I would think your only problem would be traction.

Looks like your next move would be some HD strut rods and a heavy duty 360# or more composite spring, I dont know the # of your current spring. Same problem I have now with traction, going to switch to some better/sticky tires....getting ready to order some of the offset trailing arms myself from Vansteel, looks like quality stuff, good job.......

you're right, i'll have to test the rear spring now, maybe i'd need something tougher...offset TA fm van steel is really a nice piece of work.

Thats Tom's setup is so nice. It makes dropping halfshafts out a walk in the park now that you don't have to mess with u-bolts in the stock setup. I really like your car, keep up the good work.

Very nice looking.

I wouldn't be terribly concerned with the driveshaft since it only sees about 1/4 the torque the half-shafts see.

That being said, if I was cranking out that kind of HP I'd probably be looking to upgrade for peace of mind. Either that or I'd put in a safety loop.

Sounds like a wicked car.

I also invested for some half shaft loops for piece of mind, that battery box will not stop an angry shaft from tearing through....

Awesome setup! You have the best of the best! Whose sway bar did you use and what size? Now I need another job to fund another project!

your 2.5" driveshaft most likely uses 1310 u joints...they will be your weakest link. If you use a 3.5" shaft you can use the 1330s or 1350s...1330s are not uncommon on driveshafts, 1350s are and you may have a hard time finding a pinion yoke for it.

they should be 1310 joints yes, what do you advice? i was thinking to get a chromoly 3'' driveshaft with the necessary joints, for peace of mind...

The drive shaft and its u-joints have an easy life compared to the half shafts.

The drive shaft does not get any verticle movement and it is not subjected to the TQ multiplication of the rear end gears.

I do have a mandated drive shaft safety loop. But the u-joints on the drive line seem to last forever. My half shafts go out on a bi-annual basis

I'm using 1330s, that's what the TH400 yoke (that I'm using in my ZF) uses, I could upgrade the diff to 1350s but then you'd have either a bastard joint at one end or 2 different sized u joints.....or I could get a 1350 slip yoke that fits my trans. I don't know what you have, check availability of slip & pinion yokes before buying anything.

wrongly, i've always supposed that driveshaft was more prone to go broken compared to half shafts for its longer length...but i remember sometime ago i've asked to a well known driveshaft builder if i needed to uprate my half shafts too and he just gave me a plain 'no need'!!

Giuseppe, I have a unit called a "line lock" that can set or hold the front brakes only. It is used in drag racing to heat up the rear tires. These Line Locks are terrifically hard on u-joints and other parts when you get rear slicks turning so fast that they just smoke.

I have broken two half shafts and many U-joints over the years. Stock type Yokes and spindles would not last either. But my drive shaft was made in the late 80's like 1988 when i installed my first 700R4 transmission. According to my log book the last drive line U-joints were installed nearly 8 years ago and they were still fine when I replaced the drive shaft for my 5 speed manual conversion.

I love that set up from Van Steel. It would be total overkill for my car, but it looks bullet proof.

Oooo! that's nice! I hope that setup is in my future so I can put my 383 back in the car and run slicks for consistency.

Default Progress report on Tom's Aluminum rear end housing?

I heard that Tom's Differential was planning this piece for 63-77 cars? I have the 30 spline posi with KA axles that I would like to swap over. This would balance out my car a little better because of the Bowtie aluminum block and heads that I run.
Tom himself is a very knowledgable guy but hard to approach. Not real talkative. I don't blame him because most customers ask too many questions (dumb questions!). So he doesn't start disliking me for calling, does anyone have a status as to whether this is coming out?

i had the same impression about tom, a knowledgable guy (maybe too much though) but i also had the impression he dislikes questions and has little patiente with buyers ...

it's funny though that a potential customer of his parts (then also a potential feeder of him and his beloved ) has to ask someone else to ask tom something

i'm afraid to ask as well, to be frank
