what a coincidence. im puttting the exact fan into my 82 tonite. ive got a bosch 50 amp relay and am goint to key it directly to ignition hot so the fan is on 100% of the time (miami). the plan was to hook another relay off of the ac clutch hot lead so it goes to high speed with the ac. however, it seems that it doesnt have a high speed. there are three blades on the fan. do you know the correct configuration for wiring the two speeds?
rastadr, consider connecting to the ACC terminal instead of the IGN; that way the fan won't be turning while the key is in the "start" position as it is cranking the engine.
thats a good idea considering how many amps it pulls to start thanks. got it from bills custom auto in hollywood fla. he said its a ford thing for their monster trucks f 350 or f450.
ok i know the fan is going to work and the power i can deal with but how are you going to mount it can ya send me some pics or post some ? this was I want do it too.because im not happy with my current electirc fan setup

all i know is bill from bills custom auto in hollywood fla specializes in stuffing huge big blocks into timy spaces and he says its the best he's ever used, even better than the biggest dual spals available.
Once I find a decent deal on one, that's the fan I plan to use. I figure with a temperature controlled switch to kick it into high it will probably always stay on low.

Better go to the 75 amp relays and a diode--it has 100 amp starting current. I plan to use a pulse width controller instead.

I didn't buy one yet. However, if you have a multimeter, it should be easy to figure out which are the grounds and which are the hot leads--the one with the higher resistance will be the fast speed.
I'm guessing btw.
FREEWHEELING DIODE
Since the motor is an inductive load and an inductor is an energy storage device, when the contacts of the relay open, the energy that is stored in the motor has no place to go. The voltage increases (negatively) and a spark is created across the relay contacts, greatly reducing the contact service life. If a diode is placed (reverse biased) across the motor, it will not conduct in normal operation but will conduct when the relay contacts are opened, thereby supressing the spark. The current is said to "freewheel" through the diode and the motor after the supply current from the battery is interrupted. This voltage spike can get unbelievably high, hundreds of volts for a 12V system. Use a 1N5404 which is rated at 3A, 400PIV.
For severe cooling needs, the electric fan from the Lincoln Mark VIII provides the greatest airflow. The part number is F8LH 8C607 AA and is available from Houston Performance for $149.00 plus shipping (as of 09/2002). This is a brand new Ford Motorcraft part and has a fan diameter of 18" and a uniquely shaped fan blade. For comparison, the Flex-a-Lite has 16" diameter blades. Of course blade pitch, shape and speed all contribute to air velocity, but the Mark VIII has a 25% increase in surface area.
NOTE: The Lincoln Mark VIII fan will draw continuous currents of 33A@12.0V & 42A@14.4V, and has a starting current in excess of 100A!

installed the fan last nite. cut off the stock mounting tabs and used 4 mr gasket through radiator tie wraps. almost perfect fit great seal and covers entire radiator minus 2.5 inches on each side. i just dont know where to find the connector and still dont know if it is one or two speeds.

Here's the harness and since they sell the fans, they'll know how the wires hook up. Please let me know what they say, I'm right behind you on installation...
