Default Corvette steering box install, how difficult?

Can an average guy with average tools do the install from Corvette steering? The car has no power anything and Hooker sidepipes.

Not sure what you mean here. The steering box is a bolt up. Do you have the AIM?

Are you talking about the jeep box upgrade?

Just had a Jeep (from Tommy's Corvette Steering )installed in my 70. Installer, an average mechanic, had no problems.

The tricky part is separating the tapered joints. Hold a big sledge on one side and rap smartly with another sledge and they'll pop free. Joe

Or just use the correct "pickle fork" tool...

Those tear things up. I bought pitman arm removers and haven't regreted it at all. They make big and small ones so they work on anything from ball joints to tie rod ends. I recomend buying these in both sizes.

For pitman arms, those things are great, and I have one. For parts that are going to be replaced (like ball joints and tie rod ends), I really don't care if I beat it silly or not.

I like the jeep box. When I switch vehicle from my wife's car to my vet I don't feel any difference. I forget about the steering altogether. The only time something is noticable is when it is not right, well steering is no longer something that I think about while driving.
The jeep box is easy to install in kit form and like some have already stated getting the old apart is the hard part.

I change out my springs to different rates alot so I don't want to beat my ball joints up and these work perfect. With the pitman arms these make it a breeze.

I did the install in an afternoon, without instructions, when I bought my kit there were no instructions. Hardest part was getting the steering column compressed to the right length.

If you have an Advance Auto near you, they have a great kit on their tool loaner program. It had a few sizes of pitman arm pullers, ball joint pullers and tie rod pullers. I took my whole front end apart on my 71 without destroying a boot. You pay for it and get your money back when you return it.

Default Concept One box

G'day,
I've just seen the new Concept One steering box in the April Vette magazine. Looks to be the duck's guts. Anyone here know anything about it? Anyone seen one? Surely, this must be a better set-up than a Jeep box and a lot simpler to fit than a rack & pinion.

Look it up at www.conceptonepulleys.com.
Any takers?

Do you have the stock exhaust manifolds? The Jeep box touches the manifold shielding on my 81. Headers would need to be dented at the area the box would touch.

Default Not Jeep box

BATMAN,
The article in Vette says...

"Concept One's power steering gear, meanwhile, is essentially an adapted version of the recirculating-ball unit originally installed in '99-'05 GM fullsize trucks. Concept One claims the gear provides superior durability and a lighter, more accurate feel similar to that of a modern rack-and-pinion system. It fits all '63 to '82 Corvettes."

So, does anyone here know anything about them?

Regards from Down Under
