Belts... OMG Help me please.
I took out the A/C system in my 78 and I need to run a belt from the crank to the water pump. I've now tried a 36x17(to big), 36x15(to big) 35x17(to small) and a 35x15(to big). There are no more belts left to try and I'm sick of running back and forth to the parts store. Help me please I'm gonna go crazy.

On non-A/C cars (my 79 anyway...) the water pump belt goes around crank/water pump/alternator. No way to use just crank/pump, how would you adjust tension? Or am I reading your description wrong??

When I tried it with just the crank water pump alternator belt it sounded like it was slipping I looked in my corvette maunal for a belt diagram and I saw that with no a/c there was a belt around the crank and the pump. So I'm just going by the picture in the book.

this is an interesting question.
Without the A/c compressor belt a breakage of the alt belt means instant overheating and possible engine damage.
Even a loosly mounted crank to water pump belt would be better than no backup at all.

My 73 car has said belt. They have it at ZIP and probably other Corvette supply houses.

I undo the alternator belt, remove the mechanical fan (mine is electric now), and slide the water pump puley off. Belt comes right along with it! Reverse to replace. It doesn't seem to have a lot of tension on it, but it may not need too much since it has a contact patch of almost half the pulley. The one going to the alternator barely catches the water pump, perhaps 30 degrees of it.

Yep, there is always a belt between the waterpump and crank when no AC/no PS. I just get the belt started on the WP pulley, then bump the engine over with the starter (coil wire disconnected) and it pops right on.

Its that simple.
This extra belt would have saved me from overheating and warping both heads on the way to Mt. Tremblant last summer.
i am an idiot.
i will have my mistress give me 40 additional lashes this week.
