Default Fuel injection is it legal to upgrade?

Hi all

I'm wondering if it is legal to upgrade an emmissions controlled vehical to a fuel injection system?

You guys with 75-81s that have a fuel injection system if it is illegal how do you pass emmissions?

Also how does gas milage go with the fuel injection? Is it like a new model car (- the overdrive of course ;)) ?

Thanks

ZD

Upgrading to EFI is not legal unless the EFI has a CARB EO number for your application. Retrofitting a complete fuel injected engine is legal as long as all the emissions equipment is retained. This means that should you install a L98 TPI motor in a 72, you would have to also install a catalytic converter.

How do we pass emissions? Well, here in TX the emissions testing only goes back 24 years, so I'm ok.

No emission testing in Florida either, and being a '72, I don't know of any state where it would be tested...even Kalifornia...

now your '75 is on the margin...but should be ok by now...at 26 years old...

now if you have SAFETY inspections where they do a visual under the hood, you may be in trouble too....

California tests any car. It doesnt matter if it is a Model A, they test it.
Kind of lame huh?

That is why I only buy "Southern Cars"

Cali. used to be the 100% best spot to buy a car because they were PERFECT bodies w/ no rust. Now they ALL HAVE to have emission control on it... lame.

Hey mrvette - I lived in Jacksonville from 1988 to 1996. Emission testing started around 1994 or so for the 10 busiest counties in Florida. Has it gone away?

Get collector plates, or classic. My car just turned 26. Now I can get an emissions test and classic plates. You only have to pass the test once then you don't need emissions tests for as long as you own your car!!! At least in colorado. So , I can get my car tested , passed. Then take the motor out, swap the ramjet 350, true duals and I don't have to worry about a thing!!!

I'd think that it would depend on your local regulations. The CARB EO number woudl be sufficient if you're in CA, but for the rest of the country it probably wouldn't carry much weight. logically (so I must be incorrect) I'd think that as long as your car passed emissions, then you'd be good.

I'm running the Edelbrock FI system and I had to pass emissions with it last year. With my '74 I did not have to do the dyno test, just a tailpipe reading. The way it was explained to me, if the car passes the tailpipe they do not lift the hood, if you fail then they do a visual. One nice thing about the computer control is I was able to lean the system out and set the idle rpms a bit high before I got there, then once I was done with the test, I just hit a button and it recalled my original settings, good stuff! :yesnod:

As to fuel economy I had a carb on this engine originally and it seems to do better around town. The biggest problem with fuel economy in this car is a heavy right foot. :D

I like the idea of using a lap top to change settings

can it have two settings so you could run nitros oxide or would a back fire blow a projection/edelbrock style fuel injection to pieces?

I moved hare in '97 and inspections were dropped in the entire state AFAIK by that time...certainly here in Jax....
actually I live in Orange Park, which is technically Clay co....and we never had emissions testing here....whole lotta no sense....figgers, it's based on nonsense anyway...

Check your state laws as they can are different from state to state. Also, as pointed out in previous posts, some counties may have emissions testing whereas others in the same state do not.

Also, I'm of the opinion that anything that is legal on California is legal anywhere (i.e. those parts with EO numbers).
