They don't like high RPM.Best to keep below 6000,most are done well before that.

Not mine. If they are built right they will pull well past 6000. I will shift mine at 6500 to 6700 rpm. I don't know what components or cam you have but that will determine the redline.

the redline depends upon the induction system and the cam, to a large degree. What you need to do is put it on the dyno and see where your power tapers off.

Unless it's got a real high RPM cam (unusual for a stroker), you'll see power taper off after 5500 or so.

One thing that limits the 383 rev. range is the piston speed, measured in feet per second. Long stroke engines can be tough on pistons, especially cast. If you want to rev. (who doesn't), make sure you get a light crank (drilled journals), use forged pistons, 4340 forged crank and rods. My 383 is still climbing at 6,500 and I wouldn't fear 7,000.

I think Gkull used to spin his up well over 7000 rpm, but he's pretty meticulous when it comes to the parts used.
Hopefully he'll check in.

What are the specs on the 383 from wheeler?

Hydraulic cam, 55-5800. Solid lifter, 6500 and up. Depends on the valve train as to the limits.

my 383 will spin way past 7000. thats the biggest reason i got the e- curve dist. from msd. it has a rev limiter in it! it would spin so quickly that i was not able to look at the tach and the road before it was over 7000. i set the rev limiter at 6900 just to protect me from myself

I have a Crane roller 383 and it likes to get up and breathe. Like someone said earlier...while trying to keep it between the ditches I looked down and I was at 7000 and still going. A rpm limiter wouldn't be a bad ideal for me either. Of course, I've only done that once....replacing an engine is not in my budget. Larry

WHen I dynoed my 406ci ( same stroke crank as the 383, larger bore ) the HP was still climbing at 6500RPM where we stopped.

It all depends on the cam, induction and heads on how high it will rev.

Also a motor might rev to 6500RPM and higher but is the motor making any more power at that RPM. If your power is going south at 5500RPM not much point in revving it any higher IMHO

The dyno can also be LOTA fun. After break in, you see the engine seems to be very strong and is producing a few more "horses" than you expected. Well then maybe step it up right there. Change the intake from a dual plane to a single plane with a little longer runners, see what it does!! Then swap out the carb for one with more cfms, see what it does!! Add a 1" spacer. Can you say.....25...30 or maybe even 40 more HPs with some good tuning. Of course, as long as your engine builder/dyno man are having fun tooooo.

This is from my experience with my engine doing "dyno time".

5500 is my peak hp..i don't go past 6000 with a hydraulic roller..my preference..if i wanted to go higher, i'd get a solid.

why?
thats a little conservative. and with a roller? thats real conservative! we reguarly spin our dirt cars to 7000+ for whole races. and they are stock everything but the cam, with a 2 barrel. granted we only get about 7-8 races before we feel the need to rebuild, but that just for bearings and maintanance. the sbc can take it!
